The Precision Restoration Technician will support preparation and implementation of projects via lab and field work (50%), and collect data in support of field research, monitoring, and assessment projects (30%). Other duties will include data entry (10%) and other conservation/science tasks as directed (10%). Specifically, the Precision Restoration Technician will primarily support The Nature Conservancy's Sagebrush Sea Innovative Restoration project by producing and field-testing enhanced seed materials, which are designed to increase the success of native perennial vegetation restoration in wildlands prone to invasion by exotic weeds. Other projects may include, but are not limited to, traveling to sagebrush sea states (ID, NV, OR, UT) to install and monitor field experiments, conducting seeding on Conservancy preserves, performing controlled germination experiments, and assisting with projects in collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies. This is a full-time, short-term seasonal position with a target start date of July 1st and ending November 22nd.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Precision Restoration Technician provides administrative, research, project management and/or general assistance to program or preserve staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  •  Performs field and lab work.
  •  Maintains project records.              
  •  Works in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  •  Requires overnight travel in and out of state.
  •  May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
Educational Background: 
Associates Degree in natural resources; environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months’ experience. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience working with seeds or plants in an outdoor or lab or greenhouse setting.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Field experience conducting research activities in sagebrush ecosystems, and knowledge of common plant species.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to identify plant species using diagnostic tools such as a dichotomous key.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols for using small machinery, hand tools, and power tools in field and lab/shop environment.
  • Ability to work effectively on a small team.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely travel on primitive roads and trails.
  • Time management skills.
