OVERVIEW 

The Controller is responsible for providing support to the Director of Finance and Compliance in both monthly and year-end financial closing and ensuring that all financial information is appropriately and accurately recorded in the accounting system. The Controller will supervise two staff members with functional responsibility over general ledger accounting, billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll. The Controller will be responsible for ensuring effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with field office accountants to provide training and develop accounting procedures to enhance the Finance Department support to field office programs. The Controller will update the accounting manual, and improve current procedures and internal controls to ensure quality and accuracy of financial data, maintain fixed assets and investment schedules. This position reports to the Director of Finance and Compliance.

Areas of Responsibility: 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Manage the monthly accounting closing process and meet reporting deadlines;
  • Review daily and monthly journal entries for misstatement; prepare monthly indirect rate calculation worksheet and journal entries;
  • Prepare field office programs deferred revenue calculation. Ensure all balance sheet accounts are analyzed and reconciled periodically;
  • Maintain proper accounting control over fixed assets, investment and deferred rent schedules.
  • Ensure that all allocation worksheets are updated monthly;
  • Work with Director of Finance and Compliance to develop and document procedures and protocols that improve internal controls and systems;
  • Assist in developing department training materials for field office and headquarter accountants; assist with cross training and staff development in all financial functions;
  • Coordinate with Accountants in charge of field office in preparing budgets;
  • Assist the Director of Finance and Compliance in implementing the overall objective of the Finance Department; and
  • Assist in conducting internal audits of field offices in anticipation of independent agency audit. Assist with annual financial audit and Form 990 preparation.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree
Skills/Experience: 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with five years of experience in non-profit accounting and federal grant management,
  • CPA is required;
  • Previous supervisory experience is required;
  • Thorough knowledge of fund accounting;
  • Proven ability to analyze financial statements, prepare budgets, and manage contracts;
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently with a high-level of self-motivation and ability to meets goals and deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel and database programs;
  • Experience in Navision or other accounting software is required;
  • Ability to leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs;
  • Ability to provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others; and
  • Strong communication and writing skills and impeccable attention to detail.

 

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Satisfactory Completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training;
  • Complete additional training as identified by supervisor(s) or Human Resources.
