Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Public Policy Director is responsible for managing and overseeing public policy and advocacy activities and provides leadership for advancing Alzheimer’s as a Public Health priority. This position is a key member of the Chapter Leadership Team, attends Board Meetings, leads the Steering Committee of the Board, and guides the decisions that shape involvement of the Board and Leadership volunteers

This is a full-time position, located in Lafayette, California and reports to the Executive Director. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage and provide leadership to public policy staff and State Public Policy Office activities, as well as local advocacy efforts
  • Bicultural and bilingual background is desirable
  • Implement the Strategic Plan Policy component for the Chapter and the policy and advocacy components of the Strategic Implementation Plan
  • Provide leadership to the State Policy Office of the Alzheimer’s Association activities, as well as local advocacy efforts and guide the relationship development with local and State elected officials and legislators
  • Oversee Nevada policy efforts through the engagement of coordinated staff involvement from both north and south Nevada
  • Staff the Chapter Public Policy Steering Committee; work to expand and diversify its membership and deepen the involvement of Board leadership in this work
  • Provides guidance for Community Conversation events, Dementia Friendly activities as well as government coalitions, advisory committees and stakeholder meetings
  • Present at conferences, events and educational offerings as requested on policy, advocacy and related topics
  • Oversee the engagement, training and support of volunteers as Ambassadors and leadership level work of the Chapter Diversify the reach and depth of policy and advocacy activities in diverse, cultural and underserved communities
  • Travel regionally, statewide and nationally, as needed and work occasional weekends and evenings as required
Educational Background: 
Master’s Degree in public health, gerontology, political science or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated interest in relevant policy issues
  • Working knowledge of State and Federal legislative process
  • Experience in community organizing
  • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal skills including ability to relate to individuals from diverse cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Excellent technology skills, Google Apps, public policy databases
  • Demonstrated public speaking ability and willingness to speak with media and other high profile groups

  • Participate in Walk to End Alzheimer’s staff team and personal fundraising goals
  • Work at least one Walk to End Alzheimer’s on a weekend, or as assigned
  • Respond to public policy calls to action & participate in advocacy days
  • Enhance our culture of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the job
