This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatics Coordinator plays a key role in delivering excellent service to Y members, guests and program participants, creates a positive work environment and develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA aquatics programs.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Oversees day-to-day operations for both the Michigan City Elston branch and La Porte branch pools. Ensure operations adhere to all state, local and Y regulations/standards.
- Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs Aquatics personnel and volunteers as needed. Ensures that staff maintain their work areas and have the supplies necessary to complete their responsibilities.
- Reviews and evaluates staff performance as well as develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
- Ensures proper implementation of staff procedures. Timely communicates any changes in procedures to staff.
- Provides excellent service to members, guests and program participants and ensures Aquatics staff are doing the same, contributing to customer satisfaction and member retention. The Aquatics Director should model relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Fills in for shifts when a staff member calls off or doesn’t show up as needed if a replacement can’t be found.
- Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid, AED, Oxygen and CPR trainings for Y staff and the public.
- Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
- Conducts monthly in-service for staff per insurance company.
- Keeps track of all pool inventory. Follows proper protocols to purchase pool chemicals and supplies as needed.
- Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
- Completes pool schedules for swim, water fitness classes and trainings.
- Coordinates use of aquatics facilities for program activities, events, and party rentals.
- Plans, directs and supervises aquatics program activities. Establishes new program activities in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
- Handles and resolves Aquatics concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations and unresolved issues.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
- Develops and monitors Aquatics budget to meet fiscal objectives for Aquatics department.
- Prepares and submits requested reports for monthly board packet, including, but not limited to, impact stories and director reports.
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information in a timely manner, including promoting via social media and print materials.
- Attends community events, health fairs, and meetings to represent the YMCA as needed.
- Shows up for all scheduled dates on time and in proper attire.
- Reports unsafe conditions & maintenance issues immediately to supervisor, or other person of responsibility if immediate supervisor is not available.
- Fills out maintenance request for work to be completed when there is a repair needed.
- Ensures that building is clean & tidy.
- Provides leadership role and assists during Annual Shutdown.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures.
- Follows departmental dress code. No alterations to the dress code are allowed.
- Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Helps with other YMCA functions and duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Knows appropriate emergency and safety procedures and proper exits for everyone in the facility.
- Exemplifies the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
- Assists and actively participates in YMCA events to support the overall team and YMCA mission.
- As needed, compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in the programs.
- Returns emails, phone calls, texts, etc. in a timely manner.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience:
- Previous customer service and/or professional office experience preferred.
- Staff supervision experience.
- Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software and other office equipment.
- Must have good interpersonal, public relations and communications skills.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Complete insurance trainings prior to hire and as required going forward.
- Complete Listen First training and other YMCA required trainings.
- Excellent problem solving skills are required.
Required Certifications
- Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification and Lifeguard Instructor Certification. Will train as needed.
- CPR/First Aid/AED/Oxygen certifications
