The Sustainable Aquaculture Manager oversees all aspects of the seaweed aquaculture program within YKAN. S/he provides programmatic support and leadership for developing and implementing this strategy and implements overall priorities for the strategy in line with the Global Marine Aquaculture Strategy. The position will work in close coordination with the Global Aquaculture Team and Field programs. The priority for the Indonesia Aquaculture program is fully developing a program to support the growth of seaweed aquaculture in Indonesia to support coastal communities, while reducing negative environmental impacts.
The Sustainable Aquaculture Manager is responsible for achieving the outcomes of the aquaculture program and serves as the aquaculture principle contact for YKAN. S/he establishes YKAN as a major conservation partner in aquaculture, starting with seaweed, defines conservation priorities, leads and manages a cross-cutting team to refine and implement the seaweed strategy, and builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field. S/he develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the development and management of aquaculture program, widely communicates solutions and best practices, and engages support for the strategy within YKAN and the conservation community as well as aquaculture groups. S/he provides technical and program support to YKAN programs that are a part of the strategy by identifying and resolving technical issues. The Sustainable Aquaculture Manager develops and implements key partnerships with public & private organizations, in collaboration with the Global Aquaculture lead and the corporate engagement team, public policy team and field offices, negotiating complex and innovative solutions to develop and implement conservation strategies that conserve and protect ocean habitats and natural resources.
Duties include:
- Responsible for developing and implementing YKAN aquaculture program strategy with its focus on seaweed farming and help it grow from an initial approach to an established program by working closely with field offices.
- Identifies and makes the case for the best opportunities for YKAN engagement on aquaculture based on analyses of the market, ecological impacts, type of aquaculture, partnerships, etc.
- Helps write proposals for funding and support fundraising efforts as appropriate.
- Explores and establishes partnerships with public, private and NGO sector organizations to advance the strategy objectives.
- Identify and help launch aquaculture projects based on the strategy and identified opportunities, support and track development of these projects over time.
The Sustainable Aquaculture Manager will report directly the Indonesia Marine Program Deputy Director. S/he is based in Kupang field office.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Geographic size and scope is larger than a preserve and smaller than a business unit, or overseeing one or more components of the conservation function for an entire business unit.

- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience in marine conservation practice & policy
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
- Experience negotiating.
- Professional fluency in Indonesian and English
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- 5-7 years’ experience in aquaculture specifically in seaweed industries or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
- Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
