Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Wellness Director will successfully lead a team and plan, administer, and evaluate all wellness-related programming.  This position is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of the branch wellness and group exercise programs and for the successful achievement of alignment with the YMCA of the USA initiatives to “strengthen the foundations of community” and with the Metro Atlanta YMCA strategic plan.  Also, this position will play a key role in delivering THE COACH APPROACH® and any other core wellness programs endorsed by or developed by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, e.g., Weight Loss for Life, Youth Fit 4 Life, Start for Life, etc.  This position has a budget accountability of a range of $500k - $1M and may require other major responsibilities in addition to overseeing the wellness department. 

The Northwest Family YMCA is located in Kennesaw, GA. Northwest serves the suburban communities of northwest Cobb County and southern Paulding County.  The Northwest YMCA is a large branch with over 5,000 facilities units made up mostly of family memberships serving over 20,000 individuals.  TheY has a very active membership base with dynamic group exercise programming, a robust soccer program serving over 2,000 participants each season, a variety of strong youth development initiatives including summer day camp, and multiple community outreach programs.  Total budget for the Northwest YMCA is over $5,000,000.  Wellness programming for the Northwest YMCA is extremely strong with one of the best group exercise programs in the country.  Over 200 classes are offered weekly at the Y with a large breadth of class offerings.   

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the Wellness Department, including employees and volunteers.
  • Develop and implement a plan to attract and recruit new members and corporate partnerships.
  • Conduct pilots for new programs; develop plans and manage best practices through engagement of the staff team. 
  • Will become trained in Weight Loss for Life curriculum and is able to support coaches and to assist in leading group sessions.
  • Effectively manage budgets; hold staff accountable for high-quality results using a formal process to measure progress.
  • Foster a climate of innovation.
  • Monitor progress towards branch’s goals by running and reviewing all necessary reports.
  • Lead the Y’s presence at community outreach, including the “WHY IT MATTERS” campaign. 
  • Coordinate marketing efforts to maximize enrollments and provide ongoing support to the Director on related issues.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required in exercise science, physical education, exercise psychology, behavioral science, or a health-related field. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Current national group exercise/personal training certification preferred from one of the national organizations, which are recognized by Y of the USA, e.g., ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or NETA.
  • Must obtain/maintain full access to Y-Exchange (yexchange.org), to the Metro Atlanta YMCA YISE account (yise.ymcaatlanta.com), and to the Metro Atlanta YMCA Workday account: (https://www.myworkday.com/wday/authgwy/ymcaatlanta/login.htmld).
  • Two (2) or more years of supervision experience required.
  • Fiscal budgeting experience required.
  • YMCA/ACE online certification and supplemental courses required by Y-USA within 60 days of hire date.
  • Must maintain certifications by uploading continuing education credits via Y-Exchange (yexchange.org) prior to date of expiration.
  • Must possess current Basic Life Support/AED and Emergency O-2 Administration certifications and renew them annually prior to date of expiration. Updated licenses shall be uploaded via Y-Exchange (yexchange.org).
  • Must attend THE COACH APPROACH®Initial Training within six months of hire date.
  • Must be knowledgeable about fitness-related issues including but not limited to aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, nutrition, benefits of exercise, injury-prevention, and THE COACH APPROACH®.
  • Must possess visual and cognitive abilities to utilize computer-based and written materials to administer all job-related responsibilities.
  • Must possess a high degree of human relations skills, must be able to facilitate member interaction and socialization, and should be considered a team player by members, co-workers and management staff.
  • Must have a background in staff team development and relationship-management.
  • Seeks, cultivates, and supervises volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish, collaborate, and maintain relationships with staff, YMCA members, volunteers, schools, and the general public.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, problem-solve, and possess effective time-management skills.
  • A working knowledge of computers: MS Word, MS Excel, database management.
  • Exemplify YMCA ideals and leadership qualities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess strong customer service skills and personal commitment to service and hospitality.
  • Pass a criminal background and drug-screening check.
  • Hands-on experience with utilizing data to make informed decisions.
  • Must have, at a minimum, the YMCA Team Leader certification, if presently employed by the YMCA.
