The Recreational Fisheries Specialist is responsible for defining and implementing a plan of work to advance Recreational Fisheries reform that build on and advance the recommendations contained in “The Future Catch”, a 2018 report published by the New Zealand Initiative.
- Support the convening of a multi-stakeholder “working group” to advance Recreational Fisheries reforms, with a focus on enabling the creation of a Peak Representative Body.
- Define and implement the most effective role that TNC can provide for the working group, such as participation, facilitation and/or design of draft terms of reference.
- Preparation of supporting documents for the Working Groups such as framing the peak body organisational structure and constitution, funding source(s), drafts of a recreational fisheries policy.
- Continue to progress ideas and potential projects to improve recreational catch information.
- Identify and learn from and apply lessons from positive examples in New Zealand where commercial and recreational fishers have worked together on fisheries issues.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Support program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment.
- May participate and/or lead a cross functional team.
- May manage a grant, contract or write a request for proposal.
- Interpret guidelines, evaluate information and modify processes to adapt to changing circumstances for the program.
- Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and ensuring workflow.
- Provide training for internal and external colleagues on ecological and conservation scientific principles.
- Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data.
- Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
- Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
- Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams.
- Experience managing complex projects including the financial aspect and coordinating the work of peers and partners.
- Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience with Maori appreciated.
- PhD and 1-3 experience considered.
- Experience working constructively with key stakeholder groups important to recreational fisheries groups in NZ
- Familiarity with approaches to recreational fisheries management outside New Zealand
- Strong knowledge of common software applications.
- Proven negotiation skills.
