The Director of Finance and Operations New Zealand (DFO) will provide overall direction or leadership for all operations functions of the New Zealand Business Unit (BU). The DFO will be responsible for Finance, Human Resources, Procurement, Facilities, Information Systems and Safety. The DFO will report to the New Zealand Country Director and work closely with operations teams across TNC.
The DFO will work towards meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and coordinating financial and operative plans and overseeing day-to-day tasks. They will be responsible for the development and implementation of annual budgets. They will also manage administrative tasks related to Human Resources, Information Systems and Finance, including processing forms and preparing financial reports and forecasts. They will be responsible for board and BU Director engagement in the financial management and financial sustainability of the Program, including the presentation of financial information at BU meetings. They will work with Development personnel in preparing fundraising proposals and reports for donors. They will contribute to the development of new guidelines and report to senior leadership on functional activities. The DFO will work in close cooperation with any or all of the following: Conservancy staff, donors, trustees, vendors, public agencies, financial institutions, and legal and accounting professionals. They will adhere to and advise on the organisation's policies and procedures. They will provide advice, recommendations and broad training related to operations and finance. The DFO will maintain expert knowledge of the systems and resources utilised by the team and apply this knowledge to managing support and planning communications related to the resources. They will manage documentation, initiate complex processes and serve as key team member for the enhancement of systems and tools. They will lead diverse activities, analyse situations, evaluate alternatives, project outcomes and implement solutions in order to improve effectiveness.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Act independently, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve financial and operations complex problems
- Direct or participate in negotiations for complex or sensitive agreements
- Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, GAAP and financial standards are met and managed for compliance. Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organisation financially or legally
- Provide timely and accurate financial reports and analysis
- Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, sustainability and strategic financial plans
- Perform general accounting duties, e.g.: journal entries for transfers, loans, accruals, deferred revenue and expense corrections
- Review, reconcile and monitor income statement, balance sheet and pledges
- Ensure revenue, expenses and net assets are managed to reflect donor intent
- Manage or oversee contracts, grants to partners, grants received, MOU’s and other legal agreements
- Manage or oversee activities related to in-country legal, labour and financial compliance, including leading the preparation of annual audited financial statements, reconciliation to head-office, intercompany transactions and maintenance of related entities documentation
- Manage and oversee TNC local bank accounts. Approve transactions, oversee bank reconciliations and ensure they’re completed timely and accurately
- Provide financial expertise to conservation projects such as water funds, land deals, partnership alliances, impact investing
- Manage Human Resources processes such as recruitment, promotions, payroll, benefits, onboarding, transfers, merit & equity increases and offboarding
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain
- International and domestic travel, working flexible hours as needed
- Position does not currently supervise any staff but may in the future

- Finance / Accounting experience
- Experience managing and implementing multiple projects
- Experience generating financial reports, and analysing and interpreting data
- Experience developing and administering departmental budget or equivalent
- Experience negotiating agreements
- Experience working with cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated experience handling confidential information
