Road-stream crossings (i.e., culverts and bridges) can cause flooding and have negative impacts on aquatic systems and species. The Stream Barrier Technician conducts road-stream crossing inventories and database management for priority sites in the Adirondacks of upstate NY.
This is a 12- to 14-week full-time seasonal position for the summer of 2019. Exact dates are somewhat flexible depending on the availability of the successful candidate. Preference may be given to candidates who can start during the second half of May, 2019, and conclude during the second half of August, 2019.
The Stream Barrier Technician is responsible for evaluating a suite of priority road-stream crossings in the Adirondack region of New York. The Technician will field inventory at least 250 road-stream crossings and record survey observations.
The Stream Barrier Technician will be trained in culvert inventory methods. Inventory methods will follow protocols developed by the North Atlantic Aquatic Connectivity Collaborative. The Stream Barrier Technician will be responsible for data collection, database population and maintenance, producing summary results, and general assistance to program staff as needed. The results of this work will contribute to a larger project in the Adirondacks seeking to identify priority barriers for retrofits or replacements.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises no staff.
- Collects inventory data and maintains project database.
- Resolves routine issues independently and may work under infrequent supervision.
- Observes road side safety protocol.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- May require moderate physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- May require long hours in isolated settings.
- 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Experience collecting and entering data using handheld tablet and GPS location devices.
- Must have valid driver’s license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
- PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
- Ability to make observations and decisions about the physical characteristics of a piece of infrastructure and a stream or river.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g., road-stream crossing inventory certification).
- $16.15/hr, 35-hour work week, generally Mondays through Fridays.
- May-August 2019, 12-14 weeks total.
