The Stream Barrier Technician conducts road-stream crossing inventory and database management for priority sites in the Adirondacks, NY.
This is preferably a 12-week full time seasonal position. Exact dates are somewhat flexible depending on the availability of the successful candidate.
Road-stream crossings (i.e., culverts and bridges) can cause flooding and have negative impacts on aquatic systems and species. The Stream Barrier Technician is responsible for evaluating a suite of priority road-stream crossings in the Adirondack region of New York. S/he will field inventory at least 250 road-stream crossings and record survey observations.
The Stream Barrier Technician will be trained in culvert inventory methods. Inventory methods will follow protocols development by the North Atlantic Aquatic Connectivity Collaborative. S/he will be responsible for data collection, database population and maintenance, producing summary results, and general assistance to program staff as needed. The results of this work will contribute to a larger project in the Adirondacks seeking to identify priority barriers for retrofits or replacements.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Collects inventory data and maintains project database.
- Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- Resolves routine issues independently.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- May require long hours in isolated settings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g., driver’s license, road-stream crossing inventory certification).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- College experience in natural resources, environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with field work; aquatic field work especially desired.
- Experience with handheld digital data collection equipment (e.g., GPS unit, tablet).
- Experience coordinating information from multiple sources into databases including data entry and report production.
- Experience completing tasks both independently and as a member of a small team within assigned timeframes.
- Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
- Experience performing administrative duties emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks.
- Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, web browsers).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to interpret, follow, and replicate specific written and/or verbal instruction.
- Enjoys working outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
