The Invasive Species Management Steward will advance invasive species surveys, data collection, and management at high-use recreation areas such as campgrounds and trailheads throughout the Adirondack region of upstate NY. This is a 10 to 12-week full-time seasonal position for the summer of 2019. Exact dates are flexible depending on the availability of the successful candidate.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Invasive Species Management Steward will advance invasive species field work at 50+ high-use recreation areas (campgrounds, trailheads, TNC preserves, etc.) throughout the Adirondack region of upstate New York. Daily activities will include, but are not limited to: early detection surveys, data collection with mobile monitoring tools, mechanical/chemical invasive plant management, public education/outreach, data analysis, and report writing. The Invasive Species Management Steward will work under the direction of Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program's (APIPP) Terrestrial Invasive Species Project Coordinator and with other APIPP program staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Performs early detection surveys for invasive species.
  • Collects invasive species distribution and management data using mobile monitoring tools and GPS.
  • Deploys mechanical and/or chemical management techniques to control terrestrial invasive plants.
  • Educates the public about invasive species identification and spread prevention measures.
  • May work long hours in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • May require moderate physical exertion and/or muscular strain.                                                                                          
  • Resolves routine issues independently and may work under infrequent supervision.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience working in a team environment.                                           
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • College sophomore, junior, senior, or recent graduate with at least 1 years’ experience in natural resources and/or science related field.
  • Knowledge of invasive plant/animal biology and identification.
  • Experience with invasive species management tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting scientific data with mobile monitoring tools, GPS, etc.
  • Experience, training, and/or NYS certification in herbicide application.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
