The Local Coordinator is expected to bring a combination of strategic thinking, intellectual curiosity, focus on tangible results, a collaborative “can do” attitude, and a desire for continuous improvement. We are looking for a thinker, doer, and relationship builder with demonstrated experience in marketing and business development within the social/development sector who is up for the challenge to ensure successful and timely implementation of the current Nepal program; someone who can manage multiple moving parts independently while growing the Nepal portfolio in support of the Alliance’s broader goal of facilitating large-scale adoption of clean cookstoves and fuels reaching 100 million households by 2020. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Alliance is implementing a project in collaboration with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve public health in Nepal via clean cooking through a series of measures to promote smoke-free kitchen communities.  The project will include a focus on 1) estimating health benefits of reducing HAP for household members and the broader community and 2) informing and motivating future efforts to promote smoke-free household communities in urban Nepal for improving public health. Complementary market research and strengthening activities will also be undertaken to inform future behavior change, market development, and policy efforts that will support the sustained and widespread access to and adoption of clean household energy for maximum impact.  The local project coordinator will be expected to:

  • Analyze the range of clean cooking activities underway and planned in Nepal as well as the market context to identify areas where the Alliance can act strategically in line with its value propositions
  • Develop partnerships between the Alliance and public, private, and civil society actors to advance the clean cooking agenda
  • Develop relationships with donors – multilateral, bilateral, foundations, corporate CSR, etc. – to raise funds for the sector
  • Manage the local expert advisory board for the project
  • Pursue advocacy opportunities and work with relevant government ministries to identify and support an effective policy environment for the clean cookstove and fuels market
  • Steward appropriate outreach to important stakeholder groups to keep them apprised of Alliance activities locally, regionally, and globally, and to grow Alliance partnerships
  • Represent the Alliance at local meetings, events and to the media as requested
  • Collaborate closely with Alliance secretariat program teams in designing and implementing market-enabling activities in Nepal
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree (or more) in public health, environmental science, international development, business, or other relevant field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and creative mindset
  • Ability to use strategic and analytical skills to quickly identify opportunities to create mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Must be a relationship builder who quickly gains trust and respect, and who can make connections to reach creative agreements and solutions
  • Ability to actively listen and possess excellent communication skills to enable others to understand different perspectives, question assumptions, and improve actions
  • Possess project management and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop and deliver strong compelling presentations to a wide range of interdisciplinary stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and be part of a virtual team, thriving in a start-up environment
  • Experience working in or with the commercial sector, and an ability to engage commercial sector partners and bring them on board
  • 10 years relevant experience including significant project management experience
Compensation/Benefits: 

The compensation will be competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience.

Additional Information: 
  • Successful candidate should be available starting in May 2017 and will be contracted as a consultant.
  • The candidate should be based in or around Kathmandu, Nepal, with travel across Nepal as required.
  • Successful candidate is willing to commit to this role for 18 months minimum with a 3-month probation period with learning and delivery objectives.
