The YMCA of Greater Kansas City is looking for a cause-driven professional to join our finance team as the Assistant Controller.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Assistant Controller assists in preparing and reporting financial results and statements conforming to principles of accounting, performing financial analysis, and supervising the Accounts Payable Specialist and Accounting Director. This position implements control systems that identify and prevent discrepancies.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Participate in all month-end and year-end closing processes, applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to financial recordkeeping, including performing and reviewing reconciliations.
  • Maintain adequate and effective internal controls in performing all areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, and partnership reports for review by VP of Finance/Controller prior to distribution.
  • Supervises and develops associate team.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on the collection of outstanding balances to ensure fiscal accountability.
  • Update daily cash flow including the impact of weekly paid invoices. Track, monitor and project cash flow.
  • Work closely with other departments to respond to questions and confirm accuracy of transactions processed in all systems.
  • Assist in annual audit preparation and working with external auditors on annual financial statement audit including government grant audit as necessary.
  • Facilitate training for associates to assist them in understanding financial statements, concepts, financial systems and other tools necessary to manage day to day operations.
  • Participate in a wide variety of projects and compile a variety of reports.
  • Participate and attend special events and fundraising activities in support of the organization.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five years accounting experience employing Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including one to two years of progressively responsible experience.
  • Experience in supervising staff.
  • Able to analyze, organize, summarize and articulate complex legal and financial information.
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills, and be multi-task proficient.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and monitoring budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Able to exercise high levels of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Exceptional computer skills with the ability to adapt to new software, i.e., Microsoft Office, accounting and financial reporting tools.
  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must maintain a current motor vehicle license and acceptable driving record that meets YMCA standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA
  • Demonstrated accounting experience in a complex multiple location organization
  • Experience in accounting for a $20 million revenue budget accounting system for an organization
