The Health and Wellness Director is responsible for the daily operations of the department. Working closely with the branch leadership team, the Health and Wellness Director also focuses on member service, member retention, program quality, staff development and community collaborations.

Serves as a general resource to the branch in the areas of health and wellness. Demonstrate the Y’s core values of CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead, manage, and hold accountable direct reports.
  • Provide leadership and direction to branch health and wellness department: group exercise classes, fitness center, personal training, and nutrition counseling.
  • Provide support for chronic disease prevention and management programs.
  • Collaborate with staff across all departments to achieve association goals and initiatives, including the strategic plan, special events, and fundraising.
  • Lead in the planning of the annual department budget; manages and implements the approved health and wellness budget and works with supervisor to take appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Ensure that the health and wellness facilities and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained, with a focus on safety and function.
  • Work a minimum of 10 hours between the fitness center, personal training and/or teaching classes.
  • Contact new members and provide orientations as needed.
  • Gather appropriate data and information to effectively measure and evaluate goals and objectives.
  • Design and maintain a diverse schedule of activities, classes, and programs for members of all abilities and fitness levels.
  • Stay current on exercise science and nutrition trends and research. Utilize Y Exchange and Y-USA’s Learning and Career Development Center (LCDC) for additional training and information.
  • Attend community functions and events, as assigned, to promote the Y’s mission and programs.
  • Assist in member retention strategies and sales initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and complete certification records for team members.
  • Hold regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication. Participate in departmental Level 10 and/or other related meetings.
  • Manage schedules and payroll administration for branch health and wellness department.
Educational Background: 
BS/BA degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Two or more years’ experience in health and fitness management, preferably in a YMCA.
  • Two or more years’ experience in management or supervision.
  • Nationally recognized personal training certification required. (E.g. ACE, ACSM, AFAA, CSCS, NASM, etc.)
  • Nationally recognized group exercise certification preferred or within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience with Y-USA’s chronic disease prevention and management programs preferred.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills; strong written, verbal and presentation skills are a must.
  • Y-USA Team Leader certification a plus.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time as well as squat, stoop, or bend into awkward positions. Must be able to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Computer and technology proficient: MS Office applications, social media, database usage, and mobile phone apps. Membership (Daxko) software a plus.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $33,000.00 - $38,000.00
