Salary Range:  $125,000 – $140,000. Salary offer is commensurate with experience

Benefits: Retirement contribution; 10% of salary fully paid by YMCA, once eligibility meet, 80% medical coverage paid by YMCA for the employee, 70% paid by YMCA for family. PTO and other benefits outlined in personnel policy.

Position Description:
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo is hired by and reports directly to the Board of Directors.  It is essential that the next CEO be an engaging person who aligns resources and efforts that address the needs of our service area. The person is accountable and responsible for creating the organization's long term strategic objectives with board involvement. The person must have strong fiscal management experience and strategic planning/execution skills. Possess the leadership skills to take initiative, motivate, delegate and lead others successfully are necessary components.  Organization goals will be met by ensuring that ambitious membership development, operational and financial plans, funding (including active fundraising), community outreach and partnerships, as well as advocacy, are implemented to create the highest impact program outcomes. By convening important community leaders, partners, funders, public, faith based, governmental and other nonprofits, the CEO will extend the organization’s reach and continually highlight the leadership role of the Y.  This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished visionary with a distinguished track record in operational excellence, team leadership and fund development to play a critical role in community impact.

About the YMCA

Facility Features: The Y operates two branches.  The Maple Branch, a full service Y, located in heart of Kalamazoo across from a local middle school, is undergoing extensive renovation and expansion.  A new 7,000 square foot entrance with program spaces is being added to the 130,000 square foot facility. A new warm water instructional pool is scheduled to be completed in 2018 which will complement the 6-lane lap pool.  The Portage Branch, located 6 miles away in a suburban setting, is 73,000 square feet, with the typical wellness facilities and a recent locker room addition.  Both branches have indoor tennis courts and the Portage Branch has outdoor clay courts.  In addition, the YMCA has a full-time presence in a local elementary school in a low-income neighborhood.

Membership Features: The Y has a service area of 220,000 and a membership of 18,000 per year.  With recent facility and price changes, membership has increased 30% since 2015 and continues to grow in 2017.

Programs: The Y is a community leader in aquatic programs for children, families, and seniors, has a strong tennis program at both locations, is active in chronic disease management programs, and provides Y signature programs in Summer Learning Loss Prevention and Afterschool Programs.

Staff:  31 full time staff and 270 part time staff. The YMCA has a strong leadership team committed to a proven management process.

Operating Budget Size: $5.4 million

Financial Condition: Solid, no operating debt.  Will have capital construction debt when projects are complete in 2018.

Board Members: The Board is a committed group of fifteen to twenty one (presently eighteen) diverse community leaders that uses the Policy Governance approach to guide the Boards role (through policy) in ensuring the YMCA achieves desired outcomes and to holding management accountable (monitoring with a clear separation of duties and responsibilities).  The Boards commitment is to make our community better for all through programs and services of the YMCA.

Kalamazoo/Portage area is located in beautiful southwest Michigan, not far from the Lake Michigan beaches. The Kalamazoo area is a growing diverse community, a wonderful area to raise a family, to work and play. It is midway between two major cities of Chicago and Detroit off a major interstate with excellent rail and air service.

The area is home to the Kalamazoo Promise, three institutions of higher education, two nationally recognized healthcare systems, cutting-edge medical research, world-class brewing and dining, outstanding parks, and an extensive variety of music, art, theatre, and cultural attractions. Areas of Responsibility: 

Key Deliverables and requirements for the CEO include, but are not limited to:

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Develop long-term strategic objectives with Board involvement with a plan of action to review and enhance programs offered; identify potential new programs, for both economy and effectiveness in broadening our engagement and impact in the communities in which we serve. Set priorities, enhance the operations, increase marketing and awareness. Work with the Board and appropriate YMCA staff to develop and execute an annual operational plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives.

Lead a Culture of Philanthropy: Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising program that that will establish the YMCA as a leading charitable organization within the community through the engagement of members, volunteers, staff, and donors. This plan will include robust growth in the Annual Campaign together with planned giving and capital development. Recognizing the foundational importance of the Annual Campaign, the YMCA seeks to triple annual giving to more than $500,000.

Advocate the Vision of the YMCA and be the Heart and Soul of the Operation: Sustain the momentum of the reputation of the Y by being viewed and respected as a key leader within the community.  Proactively identify and create key collaborations while always upholding the highest standards and values of the YMCA.  Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors and volunteers. Seek every opportunity to promote the key strategies and strength of the YMCA.  Be an exceptional relationship builder with a strong desire for community outreach and networking.

Fiscal Management: The candidate must have a solid track record of fiscal responsibility leadership. Important fiscal goals must include the creation of a comprehensive fund development strategy to ensure a balanced budget, revenue growth to support the current day-to-day operations as well as the development of reserves for the future needs of the YMCA.  The new CEO will achieve this through his/her skilled efforts in the generation of annual support, identifying grants, collaborations and create revenue streams necessary to support and sustain the needs of the YMCA.

Lead Staff Team and Shape the Culture: Must possess the confidence and skill to evaluate the current strengths and development opportunities of all key staff and create a plan for individual staff development.  Ensure staff culture aligns and supports organizational strategy. Create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork; establish a culture of diversity, inclusion, integrity, and character for all staff. Create an overall positive environment by encouraging values of honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and personal growth.  Celebrate excellence within the YMCA, while holding staff accountable.  Foster individual staff development. Be the heart and soul of the operation, actively interact and communicate with members and staff. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and commitment to mission. 

Skills/Experience: 

Base Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum ten years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Strong ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Experience in developing new programs and in reviewing and enhancing programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

  • Strategic planning and Fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  • Fiscally sound business management approach.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. (Those new to the YMCA may obtain this through a 3-year Bridge Program.)
  • A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management of $3M or more annually.
