Sports and Fitness Director

This position is responsible for administering all aspects of our sports and fitness programming for people of all ages. In the sports department these responsibilities would include the development, organization and implementation of youth and adult sports programs. In the fitness department, the responsibilities would include member fitness orientations, fitness consultations, group exercise, personal training, and oversight of medically based wellness initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages, directs, and coordinates all sports programming for youth, teens and adults including program development, schedules, related administration, communication with and execution of facility use agreements with community partners for program space, and recruitment and screening of volunteer coaches and instructors.
  • Manages directs and coordinates all fitness programming including member fitness orientations, fitness consultations, group exercise programming, personal training programming, medically based wellness programs, and branch-wide wellness initiatives. Develops group exercise schedule, hires instructors as appropriate, and coordinates communication of any schedule changes with membership staff and membership base.
  • Serves as the YMCA’s liaison with assigned staff at Morris Hospital to support medically based wellness initiatives, including Patient Referrals from Cardiac Rehab and Physical Therapy, and the Prescription for Fitness program.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develop schedules, and direct assigned staff. Reviews and evaluates performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Participates in the generation, experimentation, and implementation of new approaches and activities that improve and expand the Y’s mission and work.
  • Monitors all fitness related areas of the building, communicates cleanliness priorities, and coordinates repair and ongoing maintenance of all fitness equipment.
  • Expands sports and fitness programs, and develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations within the service area in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develops and monitors program budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Supports staff training and development through regular communications, staff meetings, certifications, trainings, etc.
  • Collaborates with Marketing Department on marketing and retention strategies and distribution of program information.
  • Monitors daily operations to adhere to all YMCA health and safety standards and policies.
  • Performs duties of fitness instructor and personal trainer as needed.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or experience equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Preferred certifications: Personal Training Certification and/or Group Ex Certification. ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist OR ACE Certified Medical Exercise Specialist (or must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
  • Experience in a supervisory role in a health & wellness program preferred.
  • One to two years related experience preferred.
  • Ability to train, lead and develop instructor staff.
  • Certification requirements include: Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, Blood Bourne Pathogens, First Aid and AED certifications required within 30 days of employment.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $38,000.00 - $48,000.00
