350.org is looking for a digital campaigns professional committed to climate justice. At least two years of advocacy of campaigns work is required.

The Digital Campaigner is responsible for implementing the strategy, using digital campaigning, organizing and storytelling tools to engage people across South Africa with climate justice issues and mobilize them to take action.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work with campaign and organizing teams, project teams, and partners in South Africa and in the region to identify opportunities and support the development of strategic digital campaigns
  • Implement digital campaign strategies, monitor progress, identify potential problems and employ appropriate solutions when needed
  • Create email blasts, social media and other digital storytelling content (i.e. blogs, graphics, etc.) to share updates, victories, stories and other relevant information about campaigns and climate impacts to amplify campaigns and grow the climate movement in South Africa and in the region
  • Manage and update 350Africa.org’s social media pages and channels
  • Work with photographers and videographers to produce high-quality multimedia for South African campaigns
  • Explore and implement strategies to grow 350.org’s audience and mailing list in South Africa, and potentially in the region
  • Collaborate with partners on mobilisation strategy, planning, and execution, and attend key local and regional movement/political gatherings
  • Train and support South African 350.org partner organisations and local group organisers in digital campaigning
  • Cultivate 350.org’s volunteer and partner network in South Africa through digital engagement
  • Prepare reports on campaign activities/results when required, and include analysis of the work for improvement
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Africa Digital Manager

Public Engagement

  • Understand 350.org's history, campaigns, and theory of social change, and keep current with basic climate science and policy. From time to time, use this knowledge to represent 350.org's perspective in varied public venues based on geographic location and areas of expertise.
  • From time to time, contribute work towards 350.org's overall mission that is outside of standard responsibilities and instead relies solely on geographic location or work capacity
Skills/Experience: 
  • Online Campaign Strategy: Strong knowledge of various online campaign strategies and tactics. Ability to clearly articulate and operationalize campaign strategies and plans. Ability to compile a campaign baseline, monitor progress and evaluate the effectiveness of online campaign activities.
  • Content Creation: Strong online storytelling skills, including creating content that appeals to multiple target audiences. Ability to expand and grow 350’s audience in the country.
  • Justice and Equity: Must embrace the principles of workplace justice, diversity and inclusion and apply them to day-to-day work. Must believe and embrace 350.org’s vision, mission and progressive values. 
  • Organised and Prioritisation: Organised, detail-oriented and accurate. Able to create work plans and anticipate deadlines. Be comfortable juggling multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Self Management: Ability to set professional boundaries. Resilient and able to manage self and keep composure in times of stress. Able to work independently with minimum supervision.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 to 3 years of relevant work experience
  • At least two years of experience in digital advocacy or campaign work

Preferred but not required:

  • Previous experience in climate change or environmental role
  • Understand South African climate and energy policy and integrate this and other new developments into digital campaigns
  • Interest and passion for climate justice, racial justice, women’s rights, LGBTQIA rights, human rights and other social justice issues
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Slack, Zoom, WordPress
  • Some experience using some (or all) of: HTML, CSS, Action Kit, Action Network

Work Environment:

  • Organising and attending events, including protest actions
  • Occasional international and domestic travel is required 
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary:  ZAR 465,000
