The External Affairs Manager serves as liaison and informational contact between The Nature Conservancy and country government, sub-national and local governments, bilateral and multilateral institutions/ agencies, scientific/research organizations, community organizations, indigenous groups, national affiliates of international conservation and development organizations, The External Affairs supports YKAN/The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals by coordinating, developing and leveraging strong partner relationships with the above mentioned agencies and other parties relevant to The Nature Conservancy’s program and policy work.
The External Affairs Manager coordinates and support the development of strategic partnerships. S/he coordinates all aspects related to obtainment, fulfillment and compliance to government permits, regulations and standards related to YKAN/The Nature Conservancy operations in Indonesia. S/he is also coordinating program support related to policy work and public-funding fund raising efforts to further the Conservancy’s mission. S/he builds and facilitates internal networks, coordinating events, meetings, agendas, and presentations. Duties include daily contact with national and sub-national government offices, program partners, and bilateral/multilateral agencies officials.
These may include one or more of the following functions:
- Coordinate and support strategic partnerships with relevant groups to further YKAN/The Nature Conservancy’s conservations goals, influence policies, legislation and/or, international negotiations and agreements.
- Maintains regular contact with national and sub-national offices and bilateral/multilateral officials.
- Manage and coordinate government permitting process, compliance of internal and governmental requirements and standards related to YKAN/The Nature Conservancy operations and programmatic work.
- Overall responsibility for financial management of program, including setting goals, analyzing results, and taking corrective actions, working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
- Manage and coordinate policy development work to support programs and YKAN/The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements and that the program complies with country lobbying laws and regulations.
- Manage, coordinate and/or serve as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate the work of others, organizing of strategic events, gatherings, and forums to support Divisional goals and YKAN/The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals.
- Manage and develop relationship management systems, data base systems and relevant presentations of External Affairs Division related work.
- Other tasks or duties to support the External Affairs Divisional goals, and support YKAN/The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals.
This position reports directly to the Director of External Affairs & Sustainable Practices and will be based in Jakarta office.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
- Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.
- Maintains regular contact with local, sub-national, country and multilateral officials, and/or corporate representatives on matters pertaining to administrative, legislative, and/or corporate actions and internationally negotiated agreements.
- Develops strategic partnerships with relevant groups to influence legislation and/or, international negotiations and agreements.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- Serves as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate the work of others.
- Ensures that the program complies with country lobbying laws and regulations.
- May need to gain cooperation from individuals or groups (inside and outside the Conservancy) over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish program goals.
- Fluency in English and (list language(s) of the countries of the relevant geography).
- Supervisory experience (if required).
- Experience presenting to and/or communicating with business, government or legislative staff and/or program leadership.
- Experience in designing, implementing and directing multiple complex projects and ensuring program accountability.
- Communications experience including preparing and presenting project proposals and developing written communications.
- Experience working with corporate or NGO partners, and government agencies.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
- Master’s degree in relevant areas.
- Supervisory experience, including ability to set objectives and manage performance.
- Working knowledge of current trends in relevant discipline, such as familiarity with social, economic and political conditions and issues in Indonesia (national and/or sub-national) and/or region.
- Experience coordinating projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results.
- Experience negotiating with other agencies, companies or related entities with outstanding written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions based on analysis, consultation with others, experience, and judgment.
