The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Warrior and Military Services Director serves as the principal interface between the Wounded Warrior Project organization and the Veterans Affairs (VA), the Department of Defense (DoD) medical community, and military entities. The Warrior and Military Services Director ensures these important relationships endure by building strong working relationships, improving communication, streamlining operations, seeking mutual cooperation, and partnering to ensure WWP’s presence and activities are most beneficial.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve as the principal point of contact and the interface between WWP and the Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense medical community, and military entities.
  • Oversee WWP’s organizational response to critical, high profile cases and inquiries from warriors, family members, government officials, and other interested parties. Respond to requests for assistance or to opportunities, coordinating with WWP’s leadership on appropriate programs or services.
  • Manage a team of local and remote WWP team members to effectively deliver assistance and support to wounded warriors and their families.
  • Establish effective working relationships and work collaboratively with WWP teammates and with key leaders outside of the WWP organization.
  • Develop and foster enduring relationships with resources within military installations, military and veteran treatment facilities, and active duty, reserve, and national guard entities.
  • Present WWP vision and values to the military, veteran, and health community, communicating the benefits of WWP programs and services, and inspire them to become involved with and support the WWP vision.
  • Support strategic and operational partnerships by providing top-quality advice, facilitating effective knowledge transfer, and monitoring collaborations with WWP program teams.
  • Advise WWP leadership on relationship building, strategic direction, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Coordinate directly with WWP Program teammates and Government & Community Relations teammates to identify opportunities for senior military leader engagement.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of military and VA health-related policies and procedures. Understand the various treatment options for veterans and connect with resources.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of Wounded Warrior Project and its programs and services.
  • Develop a full understanding of WWP’s impact and on and how WWP interacts with the military and veteran organizations.
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize data and feedback to identify opportunities to improve the relationships between WWP and the military, veteran, health community.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree. Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Working understanding of the basic principles and practices of the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs healthcare management and delivery systems. Working understanding of military and Veterans Affairs health-related policies and procedures. Understanding of medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare policies, e.g., Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and federal and state healthcare regulations.
  • Working knowledge of TRICARE and IDES programs, and regional healthcare issues and initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of regulations, precedents, and procedures related to the Medical/Physical Evaluation Board and Veterans Affairs disability rating system. Experienced handling complex case management.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relationship management and partnering. Exceptional interpersonal skills.  Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals, collaborate, and build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to respond to sensitive matters with diplomacy and empathy.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility, be decisive, influence others, and influence change.
  • High energy level. Self-starter; willing to take initiative.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills. Confident communicator, with demonstrated ability to present information effectively to large audiences, small groups, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Wounded Warrior Project and its mission, values, programs and services, and the impact of these programs and services on wounded warriors and their families. Demonstrated understanding of how Wounded Warrior Project impacts and interacts with military and veteran communities.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Ten years of experience working with military treatment facilities or military medical separation/ retirement processes.
  • Ten years of experience developing and building relationships and partnerships with military organizations, veteran’s associations, and similar constituents.
  • Ten years of experience working with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs healthcare management and delivery system and with military and Veterans Affairs health-related policies and procedures.

Preferences

  • Ten years of military experience, or ten years of experience working in Department of Defense or Veterans Affairs.
  • Ten years of experience with TRICARE and IDES programs, and with regional healthcare issues and initiatives.
  • Ten years of experience working with regulations, precedents, and procedures related to the Medical/Physical Evaluation Board and the Veterans Affairs disability rating system.
  • Ten years of complex case management experience.
  • Ten years of experience working with federal and state healthcare regulations, including HIPAA.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Military installation access required.
