Wounded Warrior Project’s (WWP) Public Relations Specialist is responsible for promoting the mission, programs and services the organization provides to wounded warriors, their families and caregivers through media and public relations initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop press releases, media advisories, written content for newsroom and blogs, executive bios, newsletters, talking points, organizational messaging, preparing speeches for launch events, content for WWP internal and external communications
  • Garner positive relationships with media
  • Execute communications strategy with key media and targeted audiences
  • Distribute media advisories and content/press releases through newswire distribution, and through direct reporter pitching
  • Plan press conferences and events to launch new programs
  • Create and edit video and photo assets to accompany written content being developed.
  • Identify subject matter experts at the organization, create thought leadership content and develop distribution strategy
  • Research media coverage, trending topics relevant to the organization, and keep apprised of industry standards and trends
  • Develop fresh innovative story ideas
  • Conduct extensive media outreach daily
  • Coordinate the scheduling and logistics for interviews with warriors, executives, and staff
  • Manage confidential information, content, assets and workload efforts
  • Prepare agendas and presentations for meetings
  • Keep the public apprised of the organization’s position and answers to frequently asked questions with key stakeholders
  • Develop communications campaigns and talking points to promote assigned program responsibilities
  • Initiate and facilitate media outreach opportunities as assigned
  • Work with regional staff to maximize media opportunities
  • Screen and facilitate incoming, reactive media interview requests, prepare talking points, and schedule interviews
  • Develop targeted media lists for news releases, media alerts and other story pitching.
  • Prepare and train staff and warriors for media interviews
  • Track and report weekly on individual responsibilities to include pitching efforts, newswire distributions, content creation, campaigns and successful outcomes from media outreach/campaigns
  • Use social media to conduct interviews, pitch and interact with reporters
  • Produce live video streams and conduct live interviews during events for social media
  • Assist all WWP teams with PR activities as necessary for special events, fundraisers and key initiatives
  • Other related duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, media relations, or journalism required
Skills/Experience:

  • Must possess excellent written, editing, and grammar skills
  • Excellent organizational skills needed and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects, thrive under pressure and produce high quality deliverables.
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment and meet tight deadlines
  • Strategic and critical thinking skills required
  • High energy level, self-starter and willing to take initiative with little guidance
  • Resourceful, dependable, and efficient
  • Must be comfortable working on short deadlines
  • Ability to provide high level of service to targeted client/customer base
  • Ability to work collaboratively and provide support to program teammates
  • Comfortable communicating with leadership in a professional manner.
  • Must be able to travel, work after hours, over weekends and during holidays

  • Minimum four (4) years’ related public relations experience required
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in copywriting, editing, design, photography, videography, and creativity, required
  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience with video and photo editing tools required, preferred with Adobe Premiere, Photoshop or Illustrator
  • Experience in a nonprofit environment preferred
