The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Public Relations Manager manages the public relations team and oversees external communications and organizational messaging to ensure and maintain a positive and favorable public opinion.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage public relations team members, mentoring them, and developing their skills and abilities. Manage team and individual performance to achieve organizational goals. Promote a supportive working environment where employees are encouraged to proactively address issues and solve problems.
  • Manage the external communication of organizational priorities, messaging, and news through press releases and media pitching. Approve all company media outreach.
  • Manage public relations activities for strategic partnerships, community integration, third-party events, and fundraisers. Report on and initiate interest in WWP programs and events.
  • Oversee preparation and update of information for leadership press briefing kits, fact sheets, and subject-matter-expert biographies.
  • Arrange interviews for key members of leadership. Manage requests for information, interviews, and endorsements about WWP, its executives, experts, and warriors.
  • Evaluate advertising and promotional programs for compatibility with public awareness and marketing efforts.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with national, regional, and local media representatives.
  • Manage and prioritize the public relations team’s proactive pitching of news and feature stories highlighting organizational priorities, programs and services, community integrations, strategic partnerships, and warrior personal stories.
  • Observe trending topics and news of significant interest such as veteran’s and non-profit industry issues, and report to leadership.
  • Create content in the organization’s voice using strong knowledge of communications principles including Associated Press (AP) style and with a strong attention to detail.
  • Identify and track the effectiveness of communications and messaging. Prepare reports with performance metrics for leadership to improve effectiveness of messaging and communications plans.
  • Manage relationships with vendors handling public awareness tools, wire distribution services, news clip tracking service, media database, and media management tools.
  • Oversee subject matter expert (SME) strategy implementation and identify opportunities for WWP SMEs to speak at subject matter specific conferences and non-profit conferences, sharing best practices to position WWP as a
  • Effectively communicate the WWP mission, vision, and values, and the importance of WWP programs in public forums, events, and campaigns.
  • Participate in process improvement activities and on project teams as appropriate.
  • Participate in strategic planning activities. Participate in developing and managing the department budget.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communication, journalism, or relevant related field. Equivalent combination of education, experience, training, or certification may be considered in lieu of degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • High energy level. Self-starter; willing to take initiative.
  • Strong expertise and working knowledge of organizational communications strategies.
  • Demonstrated success and expertise in managing organizational messaging and media communications. Demonstrated ability to manage crisis communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop robust media relationships with news organizations and reporters.
  • Proven success in media pitching with confirmed media results.
  • Demonstrated ability to create content in the organization’s voice. Demonstrated working knowledge of communication principles including Associated Press (AP) style. Demonstrated expertise in creating and editing press releases, statements, and organizational communications.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Strong copy editing and grammar editing skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of data analytics, performance metrics, and trends analysis.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional relationships, and interact effectively with diverse individuals to build effective working relationships. Demonstrated emotional intelligence. Ability to respond to sensitive matters with diplomacy and empathy.

  • Strong presentation skills. Confident communicator with demonstrated ability to present information effectively.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and prioritize, complete assignments, and meet deadlines with strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple projects.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

  • Five years of communications, public relations, or marketing experience.
  • Three years of staff management experience.

Preferences

  • Seven years of communications or public relations experience.
  • Five years of experience working with a nonprofit organization.
