This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the chapter's public policy efforts, including advocacy, government relations, and public health. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting and managing advocacy volunteers, coordinating legislative visits in district on state and federal levels, managing the advocacy database, collaborating with public policy staff in other Florida chapters, fostering stronger relationships with state agencies, assisting to develop state-wide public policy platform and priorities, coordinating participation in advocacy events in Tallahassee, Washington, DC, and locally, and educating chapter staff on the important role public policy plays in ending the burden of Alzheimer's disease.
The position reports directly to the VP Public Policy and will work with advocacy volunteers, community partners, national policy staff, and chapter staff.
- Work with chapter leadership to establish strategic initiatives, tactics, and measures that move chapter toward 10-year vision of serving 90% of people with dementia by leveraging power of public policy
- Along with VP Public Policy, create and update a 3-year strategic plan to grow engaged volunteer advocates by at least 15% each year, with special attention to increasing participation among minority, rural, and interfaith volunteers
- Recruit, train, engage, and recognize volunteer advocates who live in and represent each county and each legislative district in chapter's territory
- Plan, manage, coordinate and participate in legislative visits (district, state, and federal)
- Along with VP Public Policy, establish and improve state advocacy and ambassador program
- Ensure chapter surpasses federal benchmarks each year
- Work with other chapters in Florida on statewide public policy priorities to establish a uniform platform
- Improve training process for advocacy volunteers and establish uniform onboarding protocols
- Coordinate advocacy events outside of chapter district including but not limited to state and federal legislative advocacy days
- Manage and supervise public policy team of paid staff and volunteers
- Manage and maintain chapter advocacy database
- Write grants to establish a fund to offset costs of advocacy, with special focus on offsetting costs incurred by volunteers, and grow grant revenue annually to meet growing volunteer base and needs
- Author and edit submissions for online and print media highlighting public policy efforts and priorities
- Develop strong relationships within the community and represent chapter at community coalitions to build strategic alliances
- Work closely with programs staff and medical community to receive feedback for the creation of state policy
- Create proactive calendar of chapter staff-volunteer communication
- Train chapter staff on federal and state public policy priorities
- Work with team to develop and cultivate professional relationships with key state agencies, elected officials, and public health organizations
- Lead chapter's efforts in drafting and negotiating state policy
- Assist in tracking of state legislation to monitor issues affecting Alzheimer's community
- Ensure attendance at Alzheimer's Disease Initiative meetings
- Report to chapter leadership any updates from Department of Elder Affairs
- Maintain monthly reports, service statistics, and grant-related paperwork
- Lead public policy representation and participation in chapter events and fundraisers
- Experience in grassroots advocacy, public policy, and/or community organizing a must, preferably including some in Alzheimer's or related health care issues
- Demonstrated history of building volunteer programs and increasing mission delivery through volunteer power
- Highly effective organization, communication, and interpersonal skills, with ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and electronically to a variety of audiences
- Computer skills necessary for communication, record keeping, and report generation; with proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Word & Excel) and Google applications; ability to learn new database software
- Valid driver's license, proof of valid insurance. Outreach activities require use of own vehicle.

- Position operates in a flexible work environment which requires significant travel throughout 7-county area
- Position requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends to meet community needs; frequent irregular hours, high volume of public contact
- Strong understanding of and interest in community organizing and government
- Demonstrated success building and/or improving successful volunteer initiatives and programs
- Strong ability and experience with strategic planning
- Demonstrated success developing and leading a high-performing team of paid staff and volunteers to achieve strategic initiatives
