Legal Counsel - Bequests and Planned Giving Director

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Legal Counsel - Bequests and Planned Giving Director oversees bequest-related matters for WWP including providing advice and guidance to WWP leadership, managing the bequests team, providing guidance on the WWP Long-Term Support Trust (LTST), and ensuring all bequest case files, information, reports and other documents are completed accurately.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve as the principal point of contact for bequests matters for the organization.
  • Lead and manage a team of paralegals and legal professionals responsible for handling all bequest matters for the organization.
  • Provide legal advice regarding planned giving to WWP’s Major Gifts and Resource Development teams.
  • Manage bequest-related legal and financial notices, correspondence, and litigation.
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including Major Gifts, Resource Development, Accounting, Finance, outside counsel, financial advisors, and trustees and personal representatives as needed.
  • Oversee and manage the maintenance of bequest case files and correspondence records.
  • Ensure all necessary information, materials, reports, and other documents are complete and accurate bequest records are collected and maintained.
  • Draft, review, and revise correspondence, waivers, and releases related to bequest files.
  • Perform research on bequest and planned-giving topics.
  • Collaborate to prepare and present bequest training and education.
  • Oversee and maintain systems which safeguard confidential company information and personally identifying information.
  • Provide guidance on LTST, including providing legal advice on services offered by LTST.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on other legal issues such as contract reviews, as needed to support the overall legal department.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Juris doctor (J.D.) degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • Seven years of trust and estate planning experience as in-house counsel in a legal department or as an attorney in a law firm.
  • Three years of staff management experience.

Preferences

  • Ten years of trust and estate planning experience as in-house counsel in a legal department or as an attorney in a law firm
  • Five years of experience in a non-profit organization.
  • Five years of experience working with planned giving programs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert-level understanding of trust and estate laws, including restricted gifts, charitable trusts, special needs planning, public benefits qualifications, e.g., Social Security, SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits, pooled income trusts, and ABLE accounts.
  • Strong working knowledge of Westlaw, LexisNexis, and similar information sources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relationship management and partnering. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals, collaborate, and establish and build effective working relationships within WWP organization and externally with members of the public, government officials, staff, and regulators.
  • Strong attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities, prioritize, and effectively handle multiple priorities with tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility, be decisive, influence others, and influence change.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively delegate, monitor workload, and analyze work processes and metrics
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, coach and educate paralegals and legal professionals
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning to enhance knowledge in bequests and planned giving and better support the organization.
  • Strong presentation skills. Confident communicator, with demonstrated ability to present information effectively to large audiences, small groups, and individuals, and serve as a representative of the organization.
  • High energy level. Self-starter; willing to take initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legal issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Wounded Warrior Project and its mission, values, programs and services, and the impact of these programs and services on wounded warriors and their families.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Bar admission in any state required.
  • Florida in-house counsel certificate (or eligibility to obtain the certificate) required.
