The Director of Accounting is responsible for managing all accounting functions, including preparation of financial statements and related disclosures, maintenance of an appropriate system of internal controls, and setting of and compliance with appropriate accounting policies.
Responsible for overseeing the accounts payable and purchasing functions, preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, campaign reporting, and detailed reports for management and financial reporting requirements.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close; ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
- Perform or supervise month-end accounting activities such as reconciliations and journal entries.
- Assure that the Accounting department is operating effectively by evaluating staff performance against goals, improving processes and systems where necessary, cross-training staff to mitigate dependencies and developing the team. Supervise A/P, Purchasing and Payroll Departments.
- Reconciles Balance Sheet accounts monthly.
- Reconciles bank statements monthly.
- Generate financial reports and statements to Managers for review.
- Respond to accounting inquiries from management in a timely fashion.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Analyze and interpret statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, trends and other matters impacting the effectiveness of the operations
- Consult with senior leadership and other department heads, providing them with information to assist them in their responsibilities.
- Participate in and support annual Financial Statement Audit with outside auditors by providing information and schedules in a timely and accurate manner.
- Monitor and record financial transactions including Association-wide annual campaign according to company policies and regulations.
- Participates in annual budgeting processes.
- Assists VP of Finance with daily cash flow management.
- Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential always.
- Works closely with HR and Payroll to ensure accuracy and compliance with payroll processing and internal controls.
- Trains and assists personnel with accounting software.
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution.
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures and update them according to best practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance related field is required.
Skills/Experience:
- Five or more years of experience in an accounting role with progression to accounting management is required.
- Three+ years of experience managing accounting staff is required.
- Experience in a not-for-profit environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
- Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.
- Advance knowledge of Excel.
- Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems.
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $65,000.00
