The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Communications Director oversees internal and external organizational communications, including strategic planning for internal communications and strategic development and training for the Warriors Speak program. The Communications Director manages the WWP Internal communications team, institutional communications, the Warriors Speak Program, and the WWP National Campaign Team.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Manage communications team members, mentoring them and developing their skills and abilities. Promote a supportive working environment where employees are encouraged to proactively address issues and solve problems. Manage both team and individual performance to achieve goals.
- Lead organizational response to internal communications issues, ensuring appropriate, timely response.
- Collaborate with Public Awareness and Government and Community Relations teams to ensure coordinated messaging, communications, and utilization of Spokespeople/National Campaign Team members.
- Collaborate with executive leadership and human resources to maintain, track, and improve employee engagement and culture utilizing various distribution channels.
- Oversees the development and tracking of the WWP Intranet through reporting, teammate feedback, and utilization metrics.
- Lead the development and implementation for training programs to improve public speaking and presentation skills for both internal teammates and warriors.
- Lead the development and implementation of communications strategic plan including overall organizational messaging, institutional communications, the Warriors Speak team, and the National Campaign Team.
- Develop and implement a sustained deployment strategy around the growth of Warriors Speak and the National Campaign Team.
- Collaborate with Public Awareness team leadership to help develop responses to key media requests and questions. Manage responses to requests for endorsements and information about WWP, its executives, experts, and warriors.
- Establish effective working relationships and work collaboratively with WWP teammates including regional program leadership and staff. Collaborate to ensure awareness of regional program events and needs.
- Identify and track the effectiveness of communications, messaging, and communication channels. Prepare reports with performance metrics to improve effectiveness of messaging and communications plans.
- Effectively communicate the WWP mission, vision, and values, and the importance of WWP programs in public forums, events, and public awareness campaigns. Speak on behalf of WWP; assist in all efforts, and support specific campaigns as needed
- Manage Warriors Speak® team and lead their professional development.
- Participate in process improvement activities and on project teams as appropriate.
- Participate in strategic planning activities. Participate in developing and managing the department budget.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communication, journalism, or related field. Equivalent combination of education, experience, training, or certification may be considered in lieu of degree.

- Demonstrated ability to create content in the organization’s voice. Demonstrated working knowledge of communication principles including Associated Press (AP) style.

- Demonstrated working knowledge of data analytics, performance metrics, and trends analysis.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Working understanding of social media channels, e.g., Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+.

- Three years of staff management experience. Four years successfully performing in a WWP position, e.g., WWP communications specialist, or similar WWP experience in communications, public relations, or marketing, may be substituted for staff management experience.
Preferences
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, or communication.
- Ten years of communications, public relations, or marketing experience.
- Five years of staff management experience, including managing remote staff.
- Two years of project management experience.
