Reporting to the Resource Manager of the Silver Bluff Audubon Center & Sanctuary (SBACS), the primary function of the Facilities Assistant is to perform a wide variety of tasks in support of the infrastructure and natural resources of SBACS and occasionally of other Audubon South Carolina properties/facilities.  S/he will also be tasked with assisting with special events, education programs, tours, off-site presentations, or the like, as deemed necessary by the Resource Manager.

This is a part-time opportunity where the Assistant will have a maximum 20 hour week and is anticipated to work a flexible schedule.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Maintain/repair the following:
    • All roads, fire lines, trails, bridges, culverts, pond levees, and lawns by mowing, grading, plowing, filling potholes, lopping branches, clearing fallen trees and debris, abating erosion.
    • SBACS property and its boundary lines, including but not limited to fences, signage, buildings, and structures.
    • Vehicles, tractors, ATVs, boats/canoes, power equipment, hand tools.
  • Record and submit to the Resource Manager all infrastructure needs and maintenance/repair activities performed.
  • Assist with prescribed burns, timber inventories, seedling survival censuses, monitoring of timber harvests; control invasive and/or exotic plant species and wildlife depredation.
  • Assist with management of the Wood Stork foraging ponds.
  • Assist as needed with natural resource research projects and monitoring efforts.
  • Patrol against general trespass, arson, theft, vandalism, and poaching.
  • Collaborate with the Resource Manager, as appropriate and report back on all maintenance and resource management activities performed.
Skills/Experience: 
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Technical School training or 3 years of experience using applied mechanical skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with the use of, and maintenance/repair of: motor vehicles, tractors and associated farm equipment, ATVs, lawnmowers, chainsaws, weed trimmers, generators, pressure-washers, air compressors, and a wide variety of small power and hand tools.
  • Competence with minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs; welding skills a plus.
  • Familiarity with the use of herbicides, herbicide application equipment/safety, as well as conducting prescribed burns and with burning equipment/safety.
  • Competence with the use of office equipment, including computers equipped with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with the use of GIS a plus.
  • Must be able to swim.
  • Must be willing and able to work an entire shift outdoors and endure extremes of weather.
  • Ability and willingness to work positively with the public to promote conservation goals.
  • Must be able to lead and work effectively with volunteers or in other group settings.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a flexible, non-structured, often unsupervised environment.
  • Willing to work evenings and weekends as the job demands.
  • Must be available for overnight travel and have a valid driver’s license.
