The Academic and Career Services Coordinator(s) will be instrumental in ensuring educational continuity, providing ongoing student development, helping Urban Scholars work toward achievement of individual academic outcomes, and maintaining data on student milestones and benchmarks. This position will work both remotely and in person at the SJLI main office and when necessary, Urban Scholar school sites throughout Los Angeles County. 

The ideal candidate for the position being hired will have a passion for social justice, demonstrated experience in program delivery, working with middle and high school students in an educational setting, and working in a community setting with diverse populations.  Some experience with academic counseling and/or tutoring is highly desirable.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and coordinates college field trips, SAT/ACT prep courses
  • Develops individual academic plans for Urban Scholar students
  • Works with and coordinates with volunteers
  • Manages college center volunteers
  • Provides financial guidance for scholarship and employment opportunities
  • Facilitates student and parent workshops
  • Assists with college application process for youth
  • Assists with direct service and program support
  • Communicates with Academic & Career Services (ACS) Director regarding classroom support and needs of the program
  • Provides support and assistance during student’s court appearances
  • Provides case management for youth
  • Supports academic intervention work
  • Supports college access work
  • Assists in job/career pipeline work
  • Assists in planning events
  • Assists with youth engagement in community projects

Working Roles:

  • Provides program support for ACS Director
  • Works with volunteers and teachers to ensure the effectiveness of the program
  • Works with college recruiters
  • Inputs student and program information into data system
  • Tracks students’ progress toward academic and career goals
  • Collects and organizes program data
  • Provides administrative support for each school site
  • Communicates with teachers and school staff
  • Curriculum facilitation and implementation
  • Participates in youth activities
  • Organizes college tours
  • Recruits mentors and tutors
  • Assists with daily program needs
  • Implement program goals and objectives
  • Develop, coordinate and manage youth activities
  • Provides academic intervention counseling
  • Organizes materials and represents the program at various events and community activities
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Working Community Relationships:

  • Assists with facilitating collaborations and partnership with community members, public agencies, non- and for- profit organizations.
  • Assists ACS Director with community participation and volunteerism
  • Assists with increasing the organization’s visibility in the community
  • Create new community relationships for the Urban Scholars and Black Male Youth Academy (BMYA) programs

Internal Relationships: 

  • Participate in program staff leadership and development
  • Provide program information and statistics in support of completing reports
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field or 1+ years in counseling or tutoring experience
Although this is an entry level position, understanding of the field is essential
Skills/Experience: 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to the Social Justice Learning Institute goals, guidelines and principles
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Possesses a valid California Driver’s License
  • Able obtain a live scan clearance
  • Available to work on weeknights and weekends
  • Able to form strong relationships with a wide range of constituents, including, but not limited to parents, students, staff and leadership
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Experience in working with young people from a youth development perspective
