Contributes to the achievement of strategic priorities by providing professional level coordination for state and local volunteer recruitment, training, support, retention and recognition, as well providing professional level communications support and coordination. Manages projects, creates project-related materials, and determines resources necessary to complete projects. Makes presentations, keeps records, prepares reports, and drafts technical correspondence. Incumbents(s) in this position may perform all or a significant combination of the tasks described below depending on operational requirements, assigned location, and individual areas of expertise.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Recruits, on-boards and trains volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes. Ensures that proper resources are available to volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing materials. Works to fully engage volunteers in community outreach, communications and advocacy activities as they relate to the state plan. Conducts volunteer recognition activities and events.
  • Works with staff and volunteers to develop a meaningful organization of involved and active volunteers across AARP strategic priorities. Assists in building a volunteer infrastructure that has a real and sustained impact at the community level.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of communications strategies. Performs communications functions, including promotion of AARP, development of media materials, assistance with advocacy campaigns, use of social media tactics and channels, webplace and newsletter coordination. Engages in successful media relations to help inform the public on issues of concern to AARP.  
  • Demonstrates a high level of competence with oral and written communication - including in media outreach vehicles, social media, and member and volunteer communications.
  • Develops and implements projects/events/activities that advance AARP’s strategic priorities. Manages projects/events/activities within an assigned budget. Works closely with staff from the national office as well as community partners to achieve a successful project, event, or activity outcome.  
  • Consults with national office staff regarding available resources. Collaborates with assigned staff in communicating appropriate messages to AARP staff, volunteers, members, and the public.
  • Works to engage members, volunteers, and community partners in grassroots, community outreach and policy maker relationship activities in support of the AARP state plan.  
  • Demonstrates AARP Leadership behaviors in all interactions
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public administration, business, community organization/development, political science, public policy or related discipline,
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position. 
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the state’s political and human services environment.
  • Travel required up to 50% of work time.
