Located on the banks of the beautiful Flat Rock River of southeast Indiana, the Flat Rock River YMCA Camp is the perfect place for persons of all ages to enjoy a camp experience. Flat Rock offers many challenging programs, from summer resident camp, conferences and retreats, family adventures, and outdoor education. Conveniently located in the Midwest and with transportation services from two major airports, we serve children from all over the country and several countries abroad.

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President of Operations and with guidance from the Center Advisory Board of the Ruth Lilly YMCA Outdoor Center, the Executive Director is responsible for the development and administration of YMCA programs and the supervision of exempt employees, and designated non-exempt full-time and part-time employees. The Executive Director will be accountable for the work of that Center in accordance with Association goals, objectives, and policies.

Areas of Responsibility: 

There is a minimum of direct supervision and direction from the Sr. Vice President and the Center Advisory Board. The staff accountability is to the Sr. Vice President for achieving mutually accepted performance goals and adhering and administering policies, practices, and procedures established by the Association Board of Directors.

The Executive Director is responsible for management and administration of all aspects of center operations. Those aspects include selection, employment, training and supervision of staff; operation of facilities and program sites; development and implementation of plans to deepen member involvement; management of center fiscal affairs; establishment of good community relations and marketing strategies; selection and utilization of a strong volunteer structure; focus on board development and fundraising; and establishment and implementation of Association and center strategic plans.

*Designated as a First Responder in the event of an emergency.

  • Articulate a clear vision for the mission and goals of the YMCA, which inspires and engages internal constituents and the external community.
  • Champion and integrate character development and the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of center operations.
  • Enhance participant enrollment through new and existing programs, by offering progressive and innovative programs while also developing programs to meet the needs of a diverse community.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the center operating budget and meet or exceed budgeted targets.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies and other organizations.
  • Develop and lead the planning and implementation of sound public relations, member service, and marketing efforts, including identifying and implementing camping program thrusts of the Association.
  • Develop and maintain center organizational structure in concert with the by-laws of the Association and Center General Rules. Recommend practices to the Center Advisory Board in accordance with Association policies.
  • Prepare and maintain statistical, analytical, and narrative reports and records related to center programs and operations as required.
  • Serve as an active and contributing member of the executive staff team of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.
  • Coordinate management and maintenance of owned and leased facilities, properties, and equipment in accordance with Association standards.
  • Complies with the camping standards of the National YMCA and the American Camping Association.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential funding sources.
  • Develop and involve the Center Advisory Board and related committees in establishing and achieving center goals.
  • Direct the Annual Campaign with a volunteer campaign director and lead capital campaign efforts as needed in order to expand YMCA service opportunities with the local community.
  • Recruit, select, develop, and deploy center staff with consultation and approval of the Associate VP.
  • Develop and evaluate performance of center staff based on mutually accepted performance goals.
  • Provide opportunities and resources to meet staff training and development needs, including camping program staff training activities for total Association.
  • Direct staff and volunteers in the development and implementation of strategies to achieve the goals of the Association and center strategic plans.
  • Interpret the international focus of the YMCA including World Service education and fundraising.
  • Provide leadership/support for Association-wide projects and programs as assigned.
Educational Background: 
This position requires a BA/BS degree in a related field, recognition as a YMCA Senior Director or equivalent preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 5-7 years successful, professional (in camping preferred) and administrative experience (7 years preferred) with the YMCA or similar organization, and an understanding of the philosophy and nature of the YMCA. Because of the scope and diversity of responsibilities, it calls for a person of maturity and good judgment with sound human relationship skills.
  • Experience in board development and fundraising is highly preferred.
  • Experience in the supervision and training of volunteers and staff is essential.
  • A proven track record of successful marketing, financial development/fundraising, membership development, board development and program innovation is necessary
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $60,884.38 - $76,105.48
