Directs and manages the overall safety culture of the YMCA of Greater Houston. Develops and implements safety and training strategies to ensure protection, safety and security of employees and members. Identifies best practices and leads improvement initiatives to reduce workplace risks, raise safety awareness and improve safe work practices.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conducts risk assessments and safety audits, which involves analyzing risks as well as identifying, describing and estimating the risks affecting the Association. Make recommendations on areas of improvement.
  • Provides support, education and training to staff to build risk and safety awareness and assists with center in-service and EAP drills.
  • Establishes root cause of all accidents and provides corrective actions and training.
  • Identifies, evaluates, controls and minimizes the Association’s exposure to injury of workers and workplace safety issues.
  • Assures Association is in compliance with laws relating to safety, industrial health, environmental protection, hazard control and loss prevention programs including compliance with all OSHA requirements.
  • Communicates and follows up with centers for any incidents that require repairs or risk assessments.
  • Coordinate the worker’s compensation program including processing claims, establishing and coordinating an effective return to work program for injured employees.
  • Coordinate and maintain the DOT commercial driving program
  • Create, implement and update OSHA required programs as needed.
  • Teach ASHI CPR and First Aid classes as needed.
  • Manage Safety Committee.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in business, finance, risk management/safety or other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Three to five years of progressive professional experience in safety, health and environmental, risk management, liability insurance and/or safety preferably in a YMCA or other not-for-profit agency.
  • Proven ability to maintain tight control of confidential material and information.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff and volunteers.
  • OSHA, DOT, Life Safety, CSP (Certified Safety Professional)or other risk management certification preferred.
  • Certified ASHI CPR and First Aid Instructor or must become certified instructor within the first 12 months of employment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • May directly supervises part time and non-exempt employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing and approving timesheets; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; monitoring and updating all required staff certifications; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

COMPUTER LITERACY

  • Skills are essential in all of the Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to use these programs to lighten work load, develop reports and to automate procedures is very necessary. Ability to diagnose basic PC problems and to communicate those problems is very important.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Travel is primarily local between assigned centers during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $80,000.00 - $85,000.00
