Teach For America seeks a Director, Teacher Leadership Development who will accelerate the impact of corps members during the summer training institute and throughout the two-year continuum. Specifically, you will maximize the summer institute training (June and July) by working on the ground as a School Director. In this role you will directly manage a team that includes summer staff such as Corps Member Advisors, a Curriculum Specialist, and an Operations Manager, who in turn support a group of 40 to 80 corps members and the students they teach.

During the academic school year (August through May), you are responsible for helping the region meets its ambitious goals for student achievement, corps member experience, and leadership development. Specifically, you will manage and develop two MTLDs who each influence the outcomes of approximately 25-30 corps members. You will impact key leadership functions such as managing staff members to achieve ambitious results, vision setting, strategic planning, and talent cultivation and hiring. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong track record of leading and developing corps members to expand their impact and who is motivated by working through others to achieve results.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Lead a Team of Managers of Teacher Leadership Development (60%)

  • Work closely with others on the TLD team to:
    • Shape and effectively execute the strategy for improving teacher effectiveness in order to achieve ambitious student achievement goals.
    • Create and execute on a scope and sequence of development for MTLDs from onboarding to ongoing coaching development.
    • Develop a strong, outcomes focused performance culture within the program team and the corps that is grounded in our core values.
  • Lead a high-performing team of two MTLDs to achieve ambitious student achievement goals, strong corps culture results, and in turn coach corps members towards their classroom vision and goals in alignment with our regional vision and the TAL Houston.
  • Foster the leadership of your team in order to ensure strong contributions to all regional priorities.
  • Build strong relationships with school-based leaders and the program leads of our certification programs.
  • When necessary, provide coaching directly to corps members.

Prepare for and Lead a School during Summer Institute (25%)

  • Lead a summer school team comprised of 4-6 Corps Member Advisors, a Curriculum Specialist, and a School Operations manager. Effectively set vision for, train and onboard, and provide ongoing effective support and management to ensure a high-performing team throughout the summer institute experience.
  • Oversee operations, logistics and culture at the summer school site in close collaboration and partnership with school site leadership (i.e. principals and teachers).
  • Throughout the year, work with other School Directors and regional and Institute Management Team staff to set vision and plan for various parts of institute. Own and/or contribute to various projects and work-streams necessary to prepare for institute, which could include (but not limited to) working on ISAT (Institute Student Achievement Toolkit) lesson plan design, session and workshop redesign, schedule creation, diversity programming, staff training design, staff recruitment and culture building.
  • Work closely with the Director of Onboarding, Placement and Certification to ensure strong relationships and retention goals are met for our incoming corps members during the spring.

Lead Across the Movement (15%)

  • Participate in corps member selection and matriculation.
  • Cultivate corps members and alumni for staff positions to fuel our movement.
  • Lead projects and initiatives that impact the entire Teach For America – Houston community.
Educational Background: 
Hold, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience: 

Desire to develop all direct reports to fulfill demanding goals and to serve as effective stewards of the Teach For America movement.

  • Strong cultural leader and able to create strong corps culture both during the year and with a team over the summer.
    • Proven ability to build and leverage relationships, including across lines of difference.
    • Exemplifying Teach For America’s core values, in particular the core values of team and diversity should be at the forefront of this candidate’s work at all times.
  • “Trail-blazer” approach as this is a new position without a perfectly clear blue-print.
    • Comfortable setting vision and making decisions in an ambiguous space.
    • Strong strategic thinking and ability to analyze data to draw accurate conclusions and to inform team management approach.
    • Strong ability to make decisions while executing in response to new information and invest a team in decisions.
  • Superb organization, detail-orientation, and project management and execution skills.

You will also:

  • Have 2+ years of teaching experience
  • Have 2+ years of experience in adult leadership, with a track record of results in coaching teachers
  • Be a Teach For America alumnus and former MTLD (ideal, but not required)
  • Be able to work weekends and evenings, as necessary
  • Be able to travel up to 3 times per year for conferences and professional development
