As Director, Institute Operations, you will oversee Teach For America’s summer training institute logistics by managing a team that will run the housing, dining, transportation, events, IT, communication and professional needs of 400-700 corps members and staff. You will maintain a fun and high-performing culture for your operations team, and work closely with our university partner to negotiate an approximately $1 million contract. You are organized, detail- and systems-oriented, excelling at executing complex projects and managing others to outcomes. You will report to the Senior Managing Director, Institute.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Hire and train a team of four Operations Directors, and 10-12 college interns to manage the operational systems for 350-500 corps members and staff members during a six-week summer training institute (20%)
- Partner with a summer host university to negotiate the partnership agreement and work with the university’s staff and local businesses to coordinate dining, lodging, and other staff services (20%)
- Ensure that the institute is prepared to respond in any emergency situation (10%)
- Create a comprehensive plan and manage all systems at the university, including mail service, transportation, computer labs, IT support, special events, copy services, supplies distribution and professional development resources. (20%)
- Secure and responsibly spend federal grant monies by enforcing all requirements for documentation related to Department of Education funding (5%)
- Ensure that every reasonable measure is taken to preserve the health and safety of corps members and staff, including and especially those with special needs, throughout institute (20%)
- Partner with national staff to develop and enforce all corps member and staff policies regarding university life (5%)
Skills/Experience:
- 3-5 years work experience
- Prior experience managing operations at a large scale preferred
- Previous summer institute experience preferred
- Exceptional ability to build and execute a project plan
- Ability to set and evolve team vision and direction
- Understands how to build a successful team via effective team structuring, hiring and coaching
- Ability to build strong relationships with others in challenging situations
- Familiarity with contract review or negotiation
- Simultaneous execution of multiple projects and management of multiple partnerships
Work Demands
- Ability to navigate facilities that may or may not be ADA-compliant
- Ability to transport and set-up materials (up to 50 pounds)
- Ability to travel and work on-site at a university for eight weeks (including evenings and weekends) throughout the summer
