Association Aquatics Director

Develops and implements the aquatics vision and strategy to eliminate drowning within assigned group of Y’s. Work with the Association Aquatics Leadership Team to focus on Program Development, Innovation, Compliance, Safety, Strategic Initiatives and Revenue Growth. Serves as the technical expert and resource for assigned centers and programs.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop strategies to increase program quality to grow program retention, impact and revenue.
  • Ensure that Centers are following program standards, best practices and utilizing association tools and resources.
  • Identify any gaps in resources, challenges, etc. and work with the Aquatics Director (AD) and Executive Director (ED) to address. If resources and tools are not available, discuss opportunity with Association Aquatics Leadership Team and determine need and priority.
  • If need and priority align, work with team to develop resource.
  • Work with AD and ED to determine what leadership staff is needed during peak program times to ensure that consistency of program quality occurs.
  • Regularly visit and evaluate on-site and off-site programs. Provide feedback to AD and ED, address issues, determine resources needed, etc.
  • Work with AD and ED to identify program opportunities that would increase revenue and/or increase community impact.
  • Review schedules (dates/times) prior to budget year with the AD and ED to identify opportunities to align or increase program offering to increase revenue.
  • Monitor program registration and give statistic reports each session, month, or as requested by Association.
  • Monitor program return on investment (ROI) to assess need and operational effectiveness.
  • Increase innovation in aquatics by working with Association Aquatics team to determine need and priority.

  • Perform Association audits
  • Holds Centers accountable for aquatic safety guidelines and address as needed.
  • Assure compliance with State, County, City and YMCA standards.
  • Visit assigned centers to provide guidance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluate assigned centers EAPs and zones and work with Association Senior Director of Aquatics to provide guidance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure that all staff meet certification minimums by conducting monthly evaluation of certifications.
  • Use technical expertise to provide support to assigned centers and programs.
  • Serve as the point person for all aquatics questions from Aquatics Director or Center Exec.
  • Work with Aquatics Directors and Center Execs to provide technical expertise that helps centers manage their budget, forecast and reports.
  • Ensure that association aquatics budget guidelines are followed.
  • Identify safety, revenue and operational effectiveness opportunities that align with the Association plan and communicate with the Center Leadership to implement.
  • Review pool schedule, usage and determine ROI in non-peak times. Work with Center to implement changes. 
  • Assist in sharing content knowledge to assigned centers and programs.
  • Provide interim support to centers in Director vacancy.
  • Attend and participate in 4 hours in-service per month, rotating Centers.
  • Assist with safety and program development opportunities.
  • Assist with Aquatics Director in-service, workshops.
  • Work with Association Aquatics team to determine best practices, tools, resources, and trainings that fall within the Association strategic plan and department priorities.
  • Provide research on safety issues and give input on standard updates.
  • Monitor hiring progress and communicate with assigned centers to develop plan.
  • Assist with their assigned centers leadership staff interviews and give input on hiring when needed.
  • Perform new Director on-boarding.
  • Attend advisory team meeting and participate or lead teams as identified by the chart of work.
  • Identify ways to increase operational effectiveness.
  • Support the YMCA of Greater Houston Eliminating Drowning Initiative.
  • Lead efforts to establish the YMCA as leading provider of aquatics safety and quality programs.
  • Work with AD and ED to identify opportunities and grow year-round safety around water programs and work with centers to identify support and funding.
  • Ensure training, leadership, tracking, reporting and standards are followed for safety around water (SAW) and go for green programs.
  • Work to increase participation in SAW and Go for Green.
  • Increase communication of program success to parents.
  • Connect Center leadership and hub providers to create program awareness.
  • Support community events, groups, etc.
  • Serve as lead for board and community awareness within centers as requested by ED.
  • Respond to all inquiries/complaints within 24 hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five to seven years of aquatics experience in an aquatics leadership role.
  • Minimum age requirement of 21.
  • Completion of following training requirements:
  • Prior to first scheduled shift: Online training for Child Abuse Prevention, Work Place Harassment & Bullying, Universal Precautions, Information Security and Awareness..
  • Within 30 days of hire: ASHI trainings for BLS, Oxygen and First Aid.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications:
    • Lifeguard Certification including ASHI BLS, Oxygen and First Aid, CPO and Swim Instructor.
  • Preferably Lifeguard Instructor and Swim Lesson Trainer.
  • Ability to be a trainer level staff within the first 12 months of hire.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00
