Youth Development Director-Sports

Develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA youth programs with an emphasis on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This position will oversee all Youth Sports for the Trotter Family YMCA. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Expands youth sports program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities. Coordinates with photography vendor. Transports and sets up equipment for games and practices; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment, uniforms and awards as budget permits.
  • Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations. Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings, and training and meetings for coaches.
  • Recruits, trains and develops sports program staff.
  • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks.
  • Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions. 
  • Monitors and evaluates quality of the sports program.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive marketing plans for youth sports program with the support of Association and Center marketing teams.
  • Assist in YMCA special events.
  • Leads assigned aspects of the Annual Support Campaign.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, run, stoop, and kneel.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Possess adequate vision to monitor safety and enforcement of game rules.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.

Hours 

  • Flexible with scheduling and available to work operational hours of the YMCA, which may include day, evenings and weekends.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Games may be played in an outdoor environment. 

Travel

  • Travel is primarily local between assigned centers during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications

  • One to two years related experience operating a sports program with multiple locations.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) with children and adults.
  • Desire to work with children and the ability to relate to them in a positive, patient, sensitive and non-judgmental manner.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Completion of following training requirements:

Prior to first scheduled shift:

  • Online training for Child Abuse Prevention, Work Place Harassment & Bullying, Universal Precautions, Information Security and Awareness.

Within first 30 days of employment:

  • ASHI trainings for CPR-Pro, AED, Oxygen and First Aid

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, interpret, retain, and teach documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure/educational manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, staff, members of the YMCA, and/or others, as well as in one-on-one situations.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense, understanding, and sound mature judgment to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, including assisting with curriculum learning.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to be sensitive and alert to the needs, feelings, and safety of others.  Ability to ensure children’s safety and maintain YMCA and state standards and guidelines at all times.
