The Seasonal Bird Survey Technician will be part of a partnership team with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to conduct acoustic monitoring surveys for Eastern Black Rail. S/he will be responsible for: locating accessing pre-determined monitoring points in habitat, installing and maintaining bioacoustics monitoring hardware, and recovering equipment and data to be turned over to Audubon Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Additional duties may conducting vegetation assessments at survey points, documenting incidental/anecdotal observations of target species throughout the survey regions, data entry, utilizing wildlife cameras, working with volunteers and interacting with the public.
- Locate survey points utilizing imagery, maps, and GPS.
- Program and install bioacoustics monitoring recorders – including hardware and mounts.
- Perform vegetative analysis at survey sites
- Enter detailed and accurate data as needed into project databases.
- Communicate and maintain good working relationship with Texas Parks & Wildlife staff.
- Experience and demonstrated success in avian monitoring including bird identification by sight and sound.
- Knowledge of birds and their habitats, with specific experience monitoring coastal marsh birds including Eastern Black Rail.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and work as part of a team.
- Willingness and flexibility to work nonstandard hours (early mornings, evenings, etc) and weekends as the job demands.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions, on difficult terrain, and in and out of boats while maintaining a positive attitude with or without accommodation.
- Flexibility in schedule that accommodates weather conditions, with ability to work occasional weekends or holidays.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and knowledge of eBird.
- Must have valid Driver’s License, access to personal vehicle, and ability to responsibly drive company vehicles.
