Context: Guides and manages all national Sierra Club staff organizing work within assigned communities. Develops organizing objectives with organizers to achieve conservation victories and build grassroots power and movement centered in equity and justice. Coaches and develops staff organizers to build community involvement, effective volunteer leadership and strong community allies 

Scope: The Field Organizing Manager is responsible for achieving all organizing objectives and for the effectiveness of the Club’s organizing activities within assigned communities. Works with organizing staff, other capacities, campaign staff  and volunteer leaders to determine and implement strategies to win conservation victories and build grassroots power and movement. Coaches and develops each staff organizer to maximize skills, ability and effectiveness.  Creates an inclusive work environment in which all staff and volunteers feel supported. Supports organizers in collaborating with campaign teams and integrating the work across different campaigns and programs.  ct as senior Club liaison with leaders of organizations within the communities.  Ensures that programmatic commitments and objectives are met, that financial, operational and legal compliance standards are met regarding all activities in assigned communities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Creates an inclusive, anti-racist and anti-sexist work environment in which all staff and volunteers feel supported and practice supporting one another.
  • Develops community organizing priorities with organizers; guides and coaches organizing team members to develop strategic organizing plans, objectives and outcomes within each community.
  • Provides leadership and direction in the development of key partnerships within each community.  Builds cooperative relationships and influence at the most senior level in accomplishing change and/or solutions regarding conservation issues.
  • Effectively manages, guides and coaches staff, ensures individual professional development, establishes performance objectives and expectations. Monitors organizers’ progress towards meeting grassroots power building metrics, measures accomplishments and evaluates effectiveness.  Takes appropriate disciplinary action when needed, makes hiring and termination recommendations.
  • Work in coordination with campaign or program staff to ensure effective delivery of organizing campaign strategies funded by those campaigns/programs.
  • Works in coordination with the Communications Department in the development and execution of media and public outreach communications and strategies to enhance the Club’s visibility and recognition within the assigned communities.
  • Works in coordination with the Digital Strategy Department to drive integration of digital tools and data management practices.
  • Responsible for good fiscal management, fiscal controls and administrative practices in all aspects of assigned operations. Ensures compliance with Club financial, employment and operations policies and with external regulations in all aspects of assigned operations.
  • Ensures that local chapter and group volunteers are consulted and effectively engaged in assigned community organizing activities. Provides guidance and support to volunteer leaders and chapter staff in building the strength and influence of the Club within the communities. Supports the alignment between national conservation and chapter priorities.
  • Supports the Advancement Department in the development of effective relationships with donors and foundations within or with an interest in the assigned communities, and in the development of organizing objectives and strategies as part of grant projects and proposals.
  • In support of the National Political Program, identifies opportunities to advance the Club’s conservation priorities through relationships with elected officials and via electoral campaigns.  Assists the National Political Program in allocating resources for targeted campaigns and in developing organizing strategies to reach political program objectives.  Assures compliance with election laws and regulations.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Relevant BA/BS degree or commensurate education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Not less than 3 years experience leading community organizing campaigns
  • Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal communication skills
  • Prior experience and/or demonstrated ability in developing, training and coaching employees.
  • Working knowledge of business operations, budget management, restricted and grant funding.
  • In depth knowledge of the craft of grassroots organizing and the political system.
  • Experience working with communities of color
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, justice and inclusion in organizing work and an understanding of environmental justice and structural racism
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in using the media; excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Prior experience in the development of grant proposals and individual donor relationships.
  • Extensive travel required.  Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record and proof of auto insurance required.
