This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive, cause-driven YMCA. The Outdoor Center, a branch of the MetroWest YMCA, is located on 122 acres utilized for adventure-based Y programs, unique teen programming, outdoor education opportunities, conferences, and more.

This full-time, Tuesday through Saturday position is comprised of work in supporting roles for both the High Flight program and Adventure Education program from September through June. From mid-June through August, the candidate will continue to work full time, Monday through Friday, and support camp.

Areas of Responsibility: 

High Flight Specialist

High Flight is an outdoor adventure-based program designed to develop self-confidence and social skills in youth and teens at risk. The program encourages and empowers all participants to challenge themselves and push their limits while in a safe and accepting environment. High Flight uses the wilderness as its classroom and experiential activities as the tools for learning essential life skills.

Under the guidance of the High Flight Director, the High Flight Specialist will support the High Flight Program. Core expectations will include:

  • Facilitating team building activities
  • Facilitating outdoor education activities (e.g. fire building, orienteering, shelter building, etc.)
  • Co-lead 2 and 3 day overnight trips each session (4 ten-week sessions per school year works out to approximately 4 out of every 10 weekends on trips)
  • Build lasting and in-depth relationships with attending students
  • Driving participants to and from pickup and drop off locations as well as on trips
  • Creating participant progress notes
  • Communicating with parents

Challenge Course Supervisor

Under the guidance of the Adventure & Outdoor Education Director, the Challenge Course Supervisor (CCS) will assist in managing the challenge/ropes course. Core expectations will include:

  • Performing ropes course inspections (at height and ground-based)
  • Care and purchase of equipment
  • Assuring compliance with all state and local regulations, including maintaining a relationship with the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and registering our program with MA annually
  • Delivering new-staff training
  • Managing staff records
  • Delivering quality programs which set an example for all Adventure Ed staff
  • Attending and managing Open Climbs on Friday evenings
  • Assisting in marketing and media endeavors (e.g. mailings & social media posts)
  • Assisting in Adventure Education logistics (e.g. client follow up & data entry)
  • As possible, assisting in developing & implementing community programs & facility rentals

Summer Camp

Under the guidance of the Summer Camp Director, the candidate will support camp in any way that is deemed reasonable. Most often, this includes being a part of the leadership team – overseeing a specific area of camp, supervising that area’s counselors, arranging camper schedules, attending to camper issues, and supporting staff and campers in all areas of camp from the pool to the nurses’ station.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree preferred in human services, social services, recreation, education, business, or equivalent.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Prior YMCA or related work.
  • Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fundraising.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to utilize several media platforms, and attention to detail.
  • Have the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Progress in YMCA leadership certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce positive results in the areas of program development, risk management, participant retention, and assertion with challenging tasks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and purpose of the YMCA including working with diverse populations.
  • Possess or ability to complete: ropes course and belay trainings, practitioner certifications, and CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain authentic and deepened relationships with others specifically with the community and other organizations.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • A professional image and the ability to work harmoniously with staff, members and the community.
  • Possess a valid United States Driver’s License, driving record reviewed and approved by Executive Leadership, and ability to operate assigned YMCA vehicles as trained.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $38,000.00 - $40,000.00
