The Southeast Arizona Preserves Manager directs some or all aspects of protection, science, stewardship and community relations and outreach for the Southeastern Arizona Preserves of Ramsey, Patagonia-Sonoita and Canelo Hills Cienega. Serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community. The Southeast Arizona Preserves Manager will work with the Stewardship Director to align the program with the new San Pedro Watershed Plan and the overall organizational shift within TNC. This position is based at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Southeastern Arizona Preserves Manager oversees the ongoing management of the Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve, Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, and Canelo Hills Cienega Preserve along with other TNC properties within the region. Ramsey Canyon Preserve alone hosts approximately 20,000 visitors each year and provides a major public outreach role for the Arizona Chapter, including the operation of a Visitor Center, natural history bookstore, and interpretive trail system. Serves as the principle contact to the Coronado National Forest and other local government agencies involved with forest issues including planning, recreation, border security, and fire management and prevention on or near the Preserves. This may include one or more of the following functions:
- Leads and manages the Southeastern Arizona Preserves team and a large volunteer workforce associated with the support of visitor services and land and water management on TNC properties.
- Maintains the Conservancy as a collaborative conservation partner with other agencies and organizations within Southeastern Arizona.
- Defines conservation management and/or monitoring priorities for the Southeastern Arizona Preserves.
- Liaisons with the Director of Strategic Communications & Marketing to define and achieve outreach and marketing objectives, and directs outreach programs at the SE Arizona preserves including annual kids camp.
- Oversees the development of design changes to the visitor center necessary to represent TNC’s work outside of the preserve boundaries in the San Pedro watershed and beyond.
- Works with the philanthropy department to develop a more effective system to identify potential outreach opportunities to visitors of the preserves and within the community.
- Manages overall visitor center operation including a small natural history bookstore and fee collection station.
- Develops key partnerships with public and private agencies and organizations to identify and resolve technical aspects related to preserve management issues.
- Engages local community support for TNC’s local, state and national conservation efforts when requested.
- Implements process improvements to generate efficiencies and balance the competing needs of nature, site visitors, volunteers, and staff.
- Works with various strategy team leads within the watershed on the implementation of the San Pedro Watershed Plan which includes work outside of the Southeast Preserves Program.
- Interacts often and effectively with a variety of people from youth to adults.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Geographic size and scope is larger than a preserve and smaller than a business unit, or overseeing one or more components of the conservation function for an entire business unit.
- Programmatic scope will require cross-boundary work and relationships.
- May be responsible for leading or co-leading a whole system program.
- Leads and manages team or project to support and improve conservation efforts.
- Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. Establish clear directions and set stretch objectives.
- Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the department or program while controlling costs and administering budgets.
- Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
- Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Frequently makes independent decision based on analysis, experience, and judgment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in program management or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- Experience in land management and operating and maintaining sites for the visiting public.
- Experience with public outreach.
- Experience managing complex or multiple endeavors or projects, including simultaneous staff and volunteer supervision, maintenance of visitor facilities, and/or retail operations, all with deadlines and financial responsibilities.
- Experience developing large-scale, multi-party partnerships (landowners, community, government).
- Experience in written and verbal communication for a broad range of audiences.
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Negotiation and problem - solving skills.
- Must possess valid driver license.
