Context: The Chapter Director implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee, as outlined below. This position also includes responsibility for Chapter administrative support functions, also outlined below. It is anticipated that Chapter Director activities will occupy approximately 75% of the position’s time, with administrative support tasks occupying the remaining 25%. This is a part time position, working 18.75 hours per work.
Scope: Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Executive Committee for the assigned areas of chapter programs and operations. Responsible for managing staff and financial resources for the assigned areas.
Job Activities – Chapter Director:
(approximately 75% of employee’s time):
- Works with the Montana Chapter Chair, Montana Chapter Executive Committee (Ex Com) , and Montana Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's short- and long-term strategic, programmatic, and financial goals and objectives.
- Identifies areas or policies where the Ex Com needs to implement changes or take official action. Recommends policies or guidelines for the review of the Ex Com.
- Communicates the Chapter's priorities, policies objectives, and goals to volunteers, staff, and members of the public as needed.
- Prepares and presents reports to ensure that the Ex Com and other leaders are informed of major programmatic decisions and the status of finances and programs. Develops and maintains procedures to monitor the effectiveness of programs, as well as the status of the budget.
- Plans and implements an effective public communications program, develops contacts with the media to establish and maintain positive relations, to maximize the chapter's credibility and position on issues.
- Recruits and motivates volunteers and enables their roles in the effectiveness of the chapter.
- Attends and facilitates chapter meetings, task forces, and events. Builds strong relationships with other groups, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc. Represents the Chapter as appropriate.
- Coordinates efforts with the national headquarters staff and National Campaign Staff, and ensures that the chapter strategies and policy positions are in compliance with national requirements. Participates in relevant calls/meetings of Our Wild America and Beyond Coal national staff/programs in the region to ensure coordination and cohesion between the Montana chapter and national Sierra Club.
- Directs and guides the grant/ proposal process to generate operating funds for the Chapter. Working with the Chapter ExCom, plans and implements the chapter's development strategy, to meet the funding needs of the Chapter. Identifies new donor and membership markets.
Job Activities – Administrative Support:
(approximately 25% of employee’s time):
- Provides clerical and administrative support to the Chapter Ex Com and volunteer leaders.
- Working with the Chapter Treasurer, assists with selected bookkeeping duties, including voucher processing and records maintenance.
- Maintains files and databases, including mailing lists, activist lists, membership, volunteers and contributors.
- Responds to routine inquiries concerning membership and outings events from the general public, members, and volunteers. Routes other calls as appropriate.
- Coordinates Chapter meetings, preparation of agenda and takes minutes as needed. Maintains Chapter calendar.
- Reviews and routes incoming mail. Responds to inquires as appropriate by sending membership information, environmental issues, chapter schedules and events.
- May conduct routine research on specific issues related to Sierra Club positions and advocacy work.
- May assist the newsletter editor with clerical and administrative tasks related to newsletter production and distribution.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, plus at least three years of paid or volunteer experience in professional activities related to the Sierra Club’s mission. Experience with nonprofit advocacy, organization, and research is preferred.
- Experience in the recruitment and managing of volunteers is preferred.
- Familiarity with Sierra Club organizational structures and policies is preferred.
- Familiarity with current environmental issues in Montana is preferred.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and other office productivity software is required.
- Good written and verbal communications skills and strong organizational skills are required. Social media skills and experience will be helpful.
- A Montana driver’s license is required. Intermittent in-state travel will be required; during certain periods, travel may be substantial.
- The ability to work independently and self-motivate will be crucial to the success of this position. Equally important, however, is the ability to interact in a professional and positive manner with people from differing backgrounds and expressing differing views.
- The successful applicant may work remotely from a location in the state of Montana, utilizing his/her own work environment. Access to Sierra Club office space and equipment may or may not be available, depending on the applicant’s location. Workspace arrangements will be negotiated prior to employment.
