The Carpenter Ranch Manager manages the overall operation of the Carpenter Ranch and Yampa Preserve near Hayden, CO and is responsible for the oversight and maintenance of the facilities and surrounding grounds. This is a half-time, year-round position with housing provided on-site by The Nature Conservancy.
The Carpenter Ranch Manager (Manager) is responsible for oversight and maintenance of ranch and preserve facilities including an historic ranch house and education center, other housing facilities, fencing and irrigation ditches and related infrastructure. The Manager maintains the property for periodic public visitation, overnight stays by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) donors, researchers and staff, and occasional daytime meetings by TNC guests and affiliates. The Manager will serve as the day-to-day liaison with agricultural lessee(s) on the property and will be expected to monitor livestock and related agricultural activity on the property when the lessee(s) are not present. As the representative of TNC, the Manager takes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective relationships with neighbors and key partners and provides oversight for any land and/or water management projects being implemented on the property. The Manager works closely with TNC’s Philanthropy and Conservation staff on scheduling preserve visits and functions. The Manager helps provide supervision for a summer college intern living on the property. This position is required to live on the Carpenter Ranch in housing provided by The Nature Conservancy.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Lives on the Carpenter Ranch property and is responsible for ensuring that all facilities, grounds, and equipment are in good repair and working order, clean, and well organized. Identifies areas that need repair, cleaning, improvements. and either implements or delegates responsibilities to staff and/or contractors to perform those functions.
- Acts as a liaison with agricultural lessee(s) on the property and oversees integration of livestock operations and conservation programs.
- Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
- May supervise seasonal staff and interns with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
- Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
- Represents The Nature Conservancy and its interests with local neighbors and partners as well as with TNC staff, Trustees and donors.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Participates in outreach activities as deemed necessary to support the Conservancy’s conservation programs or fundraising activities.
- May participate in research and monitoring programs, including preserve monitoring and conservation easement monitoring.
- Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget development.
- May work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Experience building and maintaining relationships with a variety of partners (i.e., landowners, water managers, agricultural community, conservation education
- organizations, media, government officials, scientists, etc.)
- Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Experience with facilities management.
- Must have valid driver's license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
- Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
- Knowledge of agricultural operations.
- Experience managing staff or volunteers.
- Experience working with contractors.
- Minor carpentry or general “handy-man” type skills, including working snowmobile and lawnmower.
