The Wellness Coordinator will assist the Association Director of Healthy Living in operating the wellness department.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages the day to day programing of the designated branch healthy living program area(s).
  • Establish a yearly calendar of all classes and special events, and communicate appropriately with staff.
  • Ensure the availability of an appropriate facility/location for all program areas.
  • Assist with program promotion and evaluation by program participants.
  • Evaluate and monitor all programs to ensure premier quality and adherence to state regulations and accreditation and YMCA standards.
  • Ensures a high level of customer service which enhances the member, program participant and guest experience and satisfaction.
  • Consistently provides friendly, courteous assistance, exceeding customer expectations every day, which includes building and maintaining healthy professional relationships with customers, staff, and host agencies.
  • Supports and contributes to a safe, clean environment for staff and customers by implementing appropriate safety procedures and following YMCA guidelines.
  • Provide instructors with necessary program materials (orientation sheets schedules, student information, and program supplies).
  • Inform appropriate branch staff and members of any change in time and place of class a minimum of 24 hours prior to effective date of change.
  • Confer with Fitness Evaluation Administrator of the member’s physical fitness evaluation on the results of that test and any limitations or special needs of the member.
  • Confer with the member on the health and fitness goals and objectives for an exercise program. Design exercise program base on the goals and objectives identified and the member preferences and weaknesses as shown in the fitness assessment results.
  • Programs must include all aspects of fitness, follow proper exercise progression and comply with the philosophy and goals of the YMCA.
  • Schedule appointments with member, making sure both parties have each other’s phone number. Member must be contacted if there is an emergency cancellation.
  • Member must know that they will be charged for any session missed where the trainer was not given ample notice and showed up for the appointment.
  • Report equipment in need of repair to supervisor immediately, follow branch repair procedures and post “out of order” sign on equipment. Do not post any handwritten signs.
  • Arrive for appointments well groomed and in proper uniform. Staff shirt clean, pressed and tucked in; no tights, hats, excessive jewelry, or perfume, nametags worn.
  • Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.
  • Follow the YMCA of Greater Hartford Member Follow Up Guidelines.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Preferred majors: Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in programming.
  • Minimum of one year's experience in staff supervision.
  • Experience in developing programs for assigned program area is preferred.
  • Physical ability to instruct class when assigned instructor is unavailable.
  • Current certification in CPR/AED for Adults, Children and Infants and First Aid.
  • Current certification in Personal Training and/or Group Exercise
  • Proficient in and able to clearly communicate specific components and usage of cardio-respiratory, selectorized, free weight, and other common exercise equipment (i.e., rubberized resistance, stability balls, medicine balls, etc.).
  • Ability to conduct scientifically valid fitness assessments and appropriately interpret the results.

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is expected to meet the physical requirements of the position, which may include, a frequent amount of sitting, standing and walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, bending and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Lifting requirement of the position may be greater depending on the particular job to be performed (i.e. aquatics, child care).
