Under the general direction of the Regional Child Development Director, the Head Teacher works for the YMCA of Greater Hartford and is responsible for development, coordination, quality and supervision of child development programs and School Age Enrichment programs.
Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Create & implement lesson plans. Schedule activities and purchase supplies within budget guidelines.
- Supervise/train Assistant Teachers, Teacher’s Aides and Volunteers
- Develop and implement Child Development programs for all sites.
- Coordinate registration, scheduling and transportation.
- Display a positive attitude that is conducive to good public relations.
- Knowledge of DCF and OEC regulations.
- Knowledge of YMCA of Greater Hartford procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Obtain and maintain the Connecticut State Accreditation Standards.
- Trains, supervises, and evaluates all staff relative to responsibilities.
- Schedule substitutes and floaters for programs to ensure that ratios are met.
- Conduct parent contact and day-to-day operations of the sites assigned.
- Assist with the Branch Annual Support Campaign and the United Way by serving in a designated role.
- Wear proper identification and presentable clothing AT ALL TIMES.
- Expand job knowledge and skills by demonstrating a willingness to learn.
- Serves as a member of the total staff team. Supports total Association events as designated.
- Perform any other duties that pertain to Child Development.

Educational Background:
Possess a CT Head Teacher Certificate and working towards an Associate’s degree in child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation or related field
Skills/Experience:
The incumbent must:
- Two years direct experience working with children under the age of 13 years, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
- Bring to this position maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.
- Have very strong interpersonal and organization skills.
- Have the ability to help supervise, train, mentor, and lead Coordinators, Assistants as well as Volunteers.
- Possess a general knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, its goals, and its mission.
- Knowledge of various resources for programming ideas and the skills to utilize that information in directing daily activities.
- This position will function as a key member of the total team in developing community relations as well as interpretations of YMCA programming to the public.
- Maintain current medical and tuberculosis health form. (Expires every two years)
- Incumbent will be required to be fingerprinted and have background checks conducted by the YMCA and the state.
- Maintain updated certifications of the job (CPR and First Aid (AED), and any other as directed by your supervisor.
Compensation/Benefits:
