The GIS Assistant is a seasonal summer full-time position in our Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Office that provides the opportunity to gain experience in developing and maintaining GIS databases and producing maps related to land protection, property management and habitat restoration.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The GIS Assistant will support the Conservation Lands Program Manager by maintaining spatial databases and producing maps and/or other graphic products.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Ensures integrity of data collection and management relating to conservation projects.
  • Communicates effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, project managers, stewardship staff and others.  
  • Produces and manages maps and spatial and tabular data.
  • Works independently with close supervision and direction.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience             
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must be proficient with Esri ArcGIS Desktop 10x, or ArcGIS Pro
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and web browsers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Working towards or recently completed a GIS, Geography, Biology, or Natural Resources degree, or certificate.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks from multiple sources and to perform duties with attention to detail.
  • Database management skills including populating and editing spatial and tabular datasets.
  • Experience producing maps and/or reports from databases.
