General Summary

The primary responsibility of the Public Policy Manager is, in coordination with and under the direction of the Vice President- Programs & Services, to plan and manage federal, state and local grassroots advocacy efforts in order to achieve the public policy goals of the Alzheimer's Association.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with Alzheimer's Association Ambassadors, advocates, State Government affairs lead and coalition partners in outreach to legislators, legislative staff, and representatives of government at the federal, state, and local levels to promote an understanding of and support for policies, programs, and services to meet the needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, and their caregivers.
  • Build and work with, where appropriate, coalitions, committees, task forces, etc. to advance issues critical to individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, and their caregivers.
  • Serve as staff liaison and help develop Chapter Public Policy Committees in executing appropriate strategies and tactics to achieve the Association's public policy goals. Through these efforts will meet and exceed Chapter priority goals for public policy.
  • Engage and train Chapter staff and volunteers in advocacy activities.
  • Build and support a Chapter-wide, grassroots network of trained volunteer advocates to carry out the Association's advocacy goals. WIll include travel and in-person meetings throughout the Chapter territory.
  • Recruit and support a team of grasstop volunteer Ambassadors, each to serve as the lead Alzheimer's advocate to a member of the U.S. Congressional delegation.
  • Recruit, educate and mobilize advocates around state policy priorities of the Association, including an annual Advocacy Day in the state capital, and direct year round grassroots activities aimed at targeted state and, where appropriate, municipal leaders.
  • Activate the Chapter's advocacy email network to ensure timely and effective response to policy developments when action is required, such as attending hearings, initiating calls, emails, letters, and/or social media outreach to legislators and media.
  • Manage the Alzheimer's Advocacy Reporting and Trends ("AART") database of public policy advocates, provide monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on advocacy recruitment as well as advocate and staff contacts with federal and state.
  • Plan and implement participation in public policy special events, including the annual Advocacy Day in the state capital, and participation in the Advocacy Forum and Day on the Hill in Washington DC.
  • Work with advocate volunteers to encourage engagement in the political process, consistent with the legal parameters surrounding 501(c)(3) organizations and the Association's practices and policies.
  • Additional responsibilities:
  • Support and participate in Association events including but not limited to, Walk to End Alzheimer's, and various events/programs, as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in political science, volunteer management, human services, or a related field
  • Preferred five years' experience in advocacy, ideally with non-profit organization
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel, proficiency with CRM databases a plus
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to travel as needed to perform job duties
