The Field Technician will be part of a small team responsible for gathering rangeland health and riparian function data within the Southern Pioneers Landscape. The Field Technician will also assist with data QA/QC and data management associated with the Pioneers Rangeland Assessment Project. The majority of the Technician’s time will be spent working in the field, both alone and as part of a small team. This position requires working in rugged terrain and occasional extreme weather conditions. This is a 35 hour per week, position beginning the week of May 21 and ending mid-August, 2018. Must have valid driver’s license and safe driving record. Off-site housing provided in Hailey, ID.
- Collects ecological data using standardized methods. Methodological training will be provided.
- The Technician will work in the Southern Pioneers Landscape, but may be required to travel to other TNC sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises no staff, but will work closely with other team members.
- Receives detailed instructions, and is responsible to apply those instructions to unusual circumstances in order to complete required tasks.
- Will work with infrequent on-site supervision.
- Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.
- Monitor the progress of self and team members toward overarching research goals.
- Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- Ability to convey work instructions to other Team members, including volunteers.
The Field Technician will be working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
- require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
- present frequent possibility of injury
- require long hours in isolated settings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and execute multiple days’ work with little supervision.
- Plant identification skills relevant to southern Idaho.
- Ability to navigate cross-country using a map/compass and GPS.
- Experience using (and troubleshooting) field electronics including iPads and GPS Units.
- Experience traveling and working in remote, rugged landscapes.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with or knowledge of sagebrush-steppe and arid grasslands. Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete data collection.
- Experience using dichotomous keys to identify plant species.
- Ability to operate various types of equipment, including ATVs, in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
- Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
- PC familiarity, including database knowledge.
