The Schoolyard Habitat Project Coordinator is an essential member of Audubon Connecticut's Schoolyard Habitat Team. The Coordinator is the on-the-ground organizer for programming and lead communicator and support for our network of schools. The position is multi-faceted with opportunities to develop programming, teach, community organize, and provide guidance on habitat creation and restoration.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Coordinate all aspects of the Schoolyard Habitat Program- including:
- SYH calendar - scheduling leadership team meetings, teacher workshops, school visits, and field trips with participating schools (Fairfield and New Haven counties).
- Partners - work with ACT staff and UR partners on all program logistics of the SYH program in New Haven; work with ACT staff and regional partners statewide on program logistics and implementation; work with ACT staff and Evaluation Consultant on Stamford district-wide program integration.
- Coordinate with Audubon Greenwich staff and Curriculum and Evaluation Consultant on all program and scheduling logistics of Schoolyard Habitat school visits and field trips.
- Working in partnership with BFC Manager and SYH Consultant to develop, lead and attend special events, conferences, marketing materials, maintaining contact lists, and other day to day tasks.
- Plan for and lead leadership team meetings at participating schools, using the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Schoolyard Habitat Project Guide and Audubon CT’s resources.
- Work closely with existing partner schools who need additional support in sustaining their habitat program. Support may include habitat committee meetings, teaching lessons and curriculum support and garden maintenance/ infrastructure help.
- Assist with the teaching of Schoolyard Habitat environmental education programs to groups both on and offsite. Offsite locations include but are not limited to Stamford, Greenwich, New Haven, and Norwalk.
- Build relationships and work with private schools interested in the program
- Create a volunteer program and recruit volunteers to aid in outreach to and support of partner schools.
- Build, maintain and manage grant and deliverable tracking for partnership projects
- Manage the Schoolyard Habitat Mini-Grant Program, including developing and overseeing the application process and visiting all applicant schools. Number and amount of the grants vary each year depending on funding.
- Work with the Curriculum and Evaluation Consultant for the Schoolyard Habitat Program, the Bird-friendly Communities Manager, SYH Intern, and others on developing sound program evaluation tools and strategies.
- Participate in statewide schoolyard habitat network building
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree and background in conservation biology, horticulture, ecology, environmental science or related field with strong New England plant knowledge/identification required. Master’s degree preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Excellent organizational skills and able to work independently with a proven ability to work on several different projects at once.
- Excellent written and oral communication. Ability to communicate to a variety of audiences: professionals, the public, media, donors, and others; must be comfortable presenting in front of groups and teaching.
- Proven ability to handle extensive, diverse workload, to follow leads, while maintaining a good sense of humor and perspective; must be a team player.
- Experience facilitating diverse groups, especially on projects working with numerous stakeholders. Community organizing experience is desirable
- Teaching experience and/or curriculum development is required.
- Experience managing education or community programs and working collaboratively with multiple public, private and non-profit partners
- Experience and confidence in leading a group and initiating activities, working independently, and team teaching.
- Strong work ethic, self-motivation, enthusiasm, commitment, flexibility, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with others and with children.
- Experience and an interest in developing effective program evaluation tools and strategies
- A current driver’s license and personal vehicle are required. Driving to participating schools in New Haven and Fairfield Counties is required for meetings and programs.
- Occasional weekend work is required
