The Staff Accountant performs administrative and accounting functions: planning, organizing, developing, implementing, and coordinating.
The Staff Accountant maintains the general ledger and other financial functions. The Staff Accountant performs a variety of administrative and accounting functions including planning, organizing, developing, implementing, and coordinating the accounting processes. This position may involve early morning, evening, and weekend responsibilities.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Maintains systems for financial and administrative operations in cooperation with other staff
- Performs accounting functions and maintains appropriate general ledger subsidiary records
- Updates, maintains and reconciles fixed asset schedules, as well as processing depreciation on a monthly basis
- Responsible for capital appropriation request process
- Prepares and verifies journal entries and maintains details of transactions
- Updates and maintains recurring entries for association
- Provides support to staff on requests for assistance relating to draft issues, refunds, accounting issues, procedures, and/or software application
- Enters finalized cash receipts and updates accounts receivable
- Receives billing reports from childcare managers and verifies accuracy
- Process child care State of Michigan Department of Health Services billings
- Monitors receipt of electronic State of Michigan Department of Health Services payments and posts entries
- Prepares and handles all collections for the association; including billing and payments from RMP collection agency
- Backup for Association bank accounts reconciliation
- Responsible for importing operations account entries into accounting software
- Assists with general ledger month-end closing
- Performs account analysis and reconciliation
- Assists with fieldwork for both operational and financial audits
- Contributes opinions; provides feedback and technical knowledge
- Provides other accounting department coverage as needed; acts as a member of a cross functional team
- Performs any other functions deemed to be necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS) from four-year college or university; one year in accounting and finance experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required. YMCA or Not-for-Profit experience preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Experience with Sage Fixed Assets preferred. This position requires a detail-oriented person with abilities to organize and maintain records accurately.
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $34,500.00 - $38,000.00
