Sr. Program Director: YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, this position is part of the team responsible for marketing, planning, developing, supervising and coordinating a high quality Camp Experience for all programs.  In addition, this position is responsible for developing community awareness for YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin through marketing, promotions and events.  The Director is also responsible for program staff recruitment and supervision, management and implementation as well as budget development and implementation (Dept. 200, 201,202 and 203).  This position requires face-to-face leadership in these programs and involves early morning, evening, and weekend responsibilities. Must live on-site at Camp Manitou-Lin year-round.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Program Management

  • Oversees the curriculum, management, and facilitation of outdoor education and weekend retreats as onsite supervisor.
  • Manages the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of outdoor education and retreat programs
  • Ensures that ACA standards, the 40 Developmental Assets, and the YMCA core values are included in curriculums
  • Establishes and maintains good public relations with teachers, administrators, parents, and children using camp facilities
  • Prepares annual budget for outdoor education and weekend retreats
  • Administers the approved budget and takes appropriate action to correct variances
  • Ensures that billing, evaluations, incident reports, and other written documents are completed
  • Communicates with Food Service Director on the year round need and numbers
  • Communicates with all participants and parents as well as promotes outdoor education and retreats programs.
  • Responsible for the stewardship of camp’s natural resources, facilities, equipment and programs
  • Ensures all programs are operated in a safe and professional manner and meeting the needs of the participants while adhering to the standards of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids
  • Ensures the continued cleanliness of all camp facilities
  • Responsible for the implementation and monitoring of risk management policies for high ropes, waterfront program area and resident camp.
  • Assists with the development and production of program information for distribution while following established marketing guidelines
  • Promotes and increases awareness of YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin
  • Models and communicates the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids mission, vision and values
  • Maintains good relations with the YMCA, outdoor environment and camping communities and professional organizations
  • Provide program data and reports in support of planning processes and presentations at appropriate Board Meetings

 Human Resource Management

  • Supervise two full time program directors.
  • Manages seasonal program volunteers
  • In conjunction with other program directors; Hire, train and supervise all Summer Camp and Outdoor Education staff positions
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Association’s policies and applicable laws
  • Assists staff in identifying and meeting all development needs with action plans built into the next fiscal year budget
  • Monitors and maintains equipment and inventories so that needs of groups are met according to services promised
  • Audits payroll reports; Completes payroll
  • Supports the Association in recruitment and maintaining of diverse staff and volunteers
  • Assists in training and supervising Summer Camp
  • Assists with the coordination of activities and operations between camp departments as they relate to OE, retreat and summer camp programs and camp in general
  • Interviews, hires, and trains staff; plans, assigns, and directs work; rewards and disciplines staff; addresses complaints and resolves problems

Fiscal Management

  • Manage and development of the budget for departments 200, 201, 202 and 203.
  • Monitor and manage expenses in keeping with the program budget
  • Lead Staff giving for the Annual Fund Campaign
  • Ensures that contracts, billing, incident reports, and other written documents are completed in a timely manner.
  • Manages the financials for all program departments.
  • Completes payroll reports
  • Accounts Receivables, month end responsibilities
  • Assists staff in identifying and meeting all development needs with actions plans built into the next fiscal year budget.

Marketing

  • Responsible for the marketing and promotion of summer and school year camp Programs.
  • In conjunction with the Association Marketing Department, Operations Director and Executive Director; Develop and implement marketing and retention plans to promote Summer Camp and Retreat growth.
  • Assist the Executive Director and Association Marketing department in the development and production of program information for distribution.
  • Follow established marketing and graphics standards.
  • Promote the All YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin Summer Camp program to all Rental Group program participants.
  • Increase local awareness of YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin in the Greater Grand Rapids and surrounding areas through oral presentations, promotions, program flyers, etc

Association Support and Community Partnerships              

  • Increase awareness of YMCACamp Manitou-Lin through participation in association and community events.
  • Model and communicate the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids mission, vision, and values.
  • Provide program data and reports in support of planning processes and presentations at appropriate Meetings.
  • Improve the image of the Y and YMCACamp Manitou-Lin through quality programs, local media sources, written materials and word of mouth communication.
  • Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of Camp Manitou-Lin and the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree (BA) from four-year college or university;
Skills/Experience: 
  • One to three years’ experience with and knowledge of overnight camp programming, team building, low and high ropes courses, and waterfront programming; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience with developing and implementing summer and overnight camping.  
  • Knowledge of ACA standards. 
  • Customer service background is beneficial. Hospitality or event planning would be advantageous.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. 
  • Desire and ability to work and live outdoors with children. 
  • YMCA and camping experience preferred. Spanish speaking abilities preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • First aid certification required
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required
  • High Ropes Certification preferred
  • Y Lifeguard Certification Required within 60 days of hire
  • Y Lifeguard Instructor Certification Required within 90 days of hire
  • Michigan Chaffers Drivers License within 90 days of hire
  • Blood borne pathogens training required upon hire
  • Continued professional growth through educational study and conference/training attendance
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $39,000.00 - $41,000.00
