The Association School Age and Day Camp Director is accountable for all components of day camp programs across the association as well as school age programs in partnership with the Association Child Development Specialist. Under the guidance of the District Executive Director of Youth Development and Community Engagement, this position is part of the team responsible for marketing, planning, developing, supervising and coordinating a high quality Day Camp and School Age program across the association. This position requires face-to-face leadership in these programs and involves early morning, evening, and weekend responsibilities.

Areas of Responsibility: 

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

  • Develops association wide standards of practice which support organizational initiatives and program quality for branch day camp and licensed school age programming.
  • Works in partnership with branch leadership teams to develop budget guidelines and fiscal measurements.
  • Implements tracking systems which ensure the proper execution of contracts and billing.
  • Monitors and updates the program evaluation template to ensure the content is relevant and in alignment with LARA and YMCA standards of practice.
  • Facilitates training for program leadership to understand the process of program evaluation.
  • Completes program evaluation using the formatted template on a monthly basis (minimum).
  • Supports branch programs in executing proper incident reporting procedures.
  • Develops working knowledge of Daxko Accounting, Operations and Engage.
  • Support and drives the branch day camp and school age impact teams to continuously implement development appropriate curriculum.
  • Establishes and maintains good public relations with patrons, parents, and children using camp facilities.
  • Work in partnership with the marketing team to develop marketing plans for branch day camp and school age programs.
  • Continuously review program quality and develop tools (such as checklist and trainings) intended to support developing high quality programs.
  • Coordination of food program services needed for the appropriate locations.
  • Collaborate with branch teams to develop appropriate staffing plans.
  • Facilitation and coordination of the branch day camp impact teams and school age impact teams.
  • Assists staff in identifying and meeting all development needs with action plans built into the next fiscal year budget.
  • Support the HR department in association wide recruitment and retention events and initiatives as it relates to branch day camp and school age programs.
  • Supports the Association in recruitment of diverse staff and volunteers.
  • Develop association wide objectives describing expectations of onboarding and summer training plans.
  • Coordinate association training events and experience for branch day camps and school age programs.
  • Assist with the coordination of activities and operations between day camp departments as they relate to the school age programs and the youth development in general.
  • Provide leadership and ensure that all branch day camp sites are in compliance with all Michigan Youth Camp license and rules.
  • Assist branch teams in preparation for Healthy Kids Day and Annual Campaign events.
  • Ensure branch teams have the necessary information to address any variance reports and overall budgeting needs.
  • Collaborate with branch teams to develop collective summer initiatives and events.
  • Develop and implement tracking systems and programs which address summer learning loss/slide.
  • Facilitate content for the branch teams to gain a greater understanding of our role in the addressing summer learning loss/slide and the impact of out of school time learning.
  • Work in partnership with the Association Licensing Specialist to ensure overall program compliance.
  • Build relationships with relevant community partners with the intention of elevating the program experience.
  • Develop systems which focus on collecting demographic details and program experience information; partnering with the Grants and Mission Advancement dept to ensure organizational alignment.
  • Prepare templates which articulate program intentions (Y-branded) and create a high quality visual experience.
  • Work in partnership with the Youth Development dept team members to plan the Professional Development Day.
  • Create training resources for branch day camps and school age programs.
  • Be prepared to facilitate and create small group trainings on youth development content.
  • Creating all supplementary materials for curriculum, including supply lists, handouts, researched videos, reading material, and any additional educator information that is required to support the execution of an activity
  • Recommends purchases of instructional materials and teaching aids such as books, toys; equipment and games designed to stimulate learning
  • Reviews and evaluates facility activities to ensure conformance to state, and local regulations
  • Implements Character Development of the YMCA in program
  • Actively supports the YMCA’s commitment to inclusion and compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) where appropriate.
  • Builds curriculum and activities that are focused on skill development, developmentally appropriate, consistent with the YMCA values, and established guidelines.
  • Collaborates with the finance and accounting departments to ensure childcare payments, DHS co-payments and administration are appropriately applied.

School Age Program

  • Partner with local elementary schools to identify collaborative opportunities
  • Ensures that School Age program meets state and local licensing requirements
  • Monitors School Age enrollment
  • Monitors school Age payments, DHS co- payments and administration
  • Authorizes capital purchases in consultation with Branch Executive

Performs any other functions deemed to be necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS) from four year college or university;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Three to five years experience working in an camp setting, along with two summers of camp experience in either a day or resident camp setting; knowledge in aquatics program development and facilitation essential; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • First Aid, CPR, and BBP or attain within 60 days of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license; experience with computers, including personal computer applications such as database and word processing.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • A​bility to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. Desire and ability to work and live outdoors with children. YMCA and camp experience preferred.

  • Fingerprinting

  • Negative T.B. test and proof of current physical exam
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification required within the first 60 days
  • First Aid Certification required within the first 60 days
  • AED-Oxygen Certification required within the first 60 days
  • YMCA Day Camp Director Certification preferred within the first year of employment
  • Michigan ServSafe food handlers licenses within 60 days
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00
