For over 150 years the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids has responded to the changing needs of its community. The Y is a $34 million organization serving 55,000 members with a team of approximately 240 Full-time and 1,200 Part-time / Seasonal staff impacting individuals and families residing in Barry, Ionia, Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties.
Reporting to the President/CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for setting operational strategy and ensuring successful operations and growth of the Y through program expansion and innovation, membership growth and engagement, volunteer and staff development, as well as strong fiscal management, risk management, facility management and financial development.
The COO is directly responsible for providing leadership and direction to eight branches as well as the Youth Development, Business Services, and Membership and Program Association leaders.
- Supervises branch District Executives as well as Youth Development, Membership and Program, and Business Services Association functions to assure sound operations. Provides leadership and direction to the branches by coaching branch executives and by providing overall direction to the branch volunteers. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
- Plays a leadership role in setting and implementing overall Y policies, procedures and strategies as member of the senior management team.
- Monitors monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.
- Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development, collaborations, and mergers and acquisitions.
- Identifies potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
- Promotes a values-based, servant leadership environment, demonstrating collaboration and supporting the values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and inclusion.
- Supports and collaborates with branch leadership to develop communication and campaign strategies to successfully market the annual campaign. Supports plans for identifying, cultivating and soliciting branch annual fund prospects.
- Provide leadership to the District Executive and Branch Executive directors to recruit, train, develop, and renew the volunteers on the board who support the mission of the Y. Lead volunteers in creating and aligning their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the association.
- Operationalizes and implements the Association Strategic Plan and directs branch planning to ensure branch participation and ownership (staff and volunteer) in the strategic plan.
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to Association signature programs.
- Actively participates in the Senior Leadership Team, Branch Operations Team, Association task forces and committees to promote branch connectivity.
- As delegated, handles duties of the CEO in their absence.
- Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
- Ten plus years of demonstrated success in YMCA operations in a senior management role
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple physical locations and program sites
- Proven ability to produce positive results in the areas of staff development, budgeting and fiscal management, program development, financial development, facility management, risk management, membership recruitment and retention, board and volunteer development, and conflict resolution
- Commitment to the mission and purpose of the YMCA and ability to communicate and motivate others about the YMCA, its mission, and programs
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
